My XC-603 has not been booting anything.

So I recently got this computer from a friend and decided to turn it into an Ubuntu machine because it was slow with windows 8, and wanted to make a retro-gaming computer. I wiped 8 from the drive and my Live USB had not been detected. I tried a live usb of other linux distros but none of those worked. I then tried to put my SSD with windows 10 from my main computer but it continued to say, "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert media in selected device and press a key" (Said the same with the others). I looked up the problems elsewhere, but every solution required that it update the BIOS through the OS that I had wiped. I can't even get the update USB to work. After that I thought it might work with a CD, but nope. Not 100% what to do now. Please Help. :/

Check if BIOS is set to UEFI or LaunchCSM/Legacy

if it's UEFI, you need to create a proper compatible EFI bootable installation media.

you can do it using last Ubuntu x64 OS version and burn the iso image to an USB flash drive using Rufus (set it as on the main page screenshot)

Your desktop computer has basically three different UEFI modes.

    1. Default UEFI mode with secure boot enabled and

Launch CSM is set to never

    2. UEFI mode with secure boot disabled and

Launch CSM is set to never

    3. Legacy mode with secure boot disabled and

    Launch CSM set to always

Ironfly suggested that you try EFi installation with Rufus first....which is probably best.  Try his suggestion with mode 2 first.

Mode 1 is never going to work on a desktop with AMI UEFI and Linux due to secure boot.

If you need to clean install free Windows 8.1 so you can update BIOS  then read the link below......

Edit: don't read those laptop topics and get confused about installing Linux because you have a desktop.  Those laptops use Insysde H2o.  I'm pretty sure you have AMI.

Well, The problem with my BIOS that I talked about earlier is that it didn't have CSM. I'm going ahead and downloading windows 8.1 to update the BIOS, but I thought i might let you know.

Should I intall 8 to the drive first or should I try USB booting with the BIOS update?

it's a windows based BIOS flasher, you need windows OS installed to do it.

On my Acer TC-605 desktop computer, the only thing that I did was to "disable secure boot".

You should leave CSM alone.  The default setting for CSM on a Windows 8 computer is "never".

You should leave CSM at the default and not mess with it if you are following Ironfly's instuctions of an EFI Ubuntu install.

Well now I have a new problem, the 8 intaller asks for a key, but I don't have one. :/ Is there a temporary key I can get from Microsoft?

    Just skip the key.

Well that's the thing, I have disabled secure boot.

Normally you can skip the product key request, if you are not able to skip it, create a windows 10 installation media, this for sure it will let you skip the product key request.

WIN_20161113_124757.JPGThere is not a skip button.

If it won't let you skip the key, then your computer probably came with the Bing version of Windows 8.1.  You can't use the vanilla Windows 8.1 if your computer came with the Bing version of Windows 8.1.

So you'll have to use Windows 10 instead.

If you previously had secure boot disabled and couldn't get it to work.....the most likely reasons for that are....

    1. You didn't create your Ubuntu installation media properly with Rufus

    or

    2.  You need that BIOS update

    or

    3. You're using a graphics card.  For example, I have no problem installing Ubuntu on my desktop with Intel HD4600 graphics.  But on my other desktop with Nvidia gtx 960 graphics card, it gives me black screen and won't let me install or use live.  .  I'm sure I could get it to work by googling, but I never bothered because I can run Linux with hyper-v on that computer.

Neither 1 or 3, because the MOBO is so small that the only pci/addin slot is mini for better wireless (the kind in laptops). 1 is not right because I had to use another computer to install linux onto the HDD (I had done it prior to this). Another problem is that the SSD that I use for my main computer has 10 on it, but still says that there is no bootable media.

Ok, so now I have confirmed a working 8 drive not working with the acer computer. I also think the BIOS needs that update because the list of updates for it shows "Change Setup default setting to meet Non-Windows BIOS request." It could be something else though due to the windows HDD not working.

Non windows BIOS request means HDD access by other OS apart windows...so windows is not involved.

have you tried to create a bootable windows 10 USB flash drive using Rufus?

once plugged to your PC, press F12 at boot and choose the USB flash drive as bootable device.

The link below explains how to clean install Windows 8.1, but it's the same instructions for Windows 10 (obviously you use the Windows 10 iso).

Step-by-Step instructions.  Read through the entire link before you begin.
