Effects of malware

My iconia tab 8 windows tablet refuses to switch on, then if it comes on it freezes, if it doesn't freeze I can open something and then it freezes or just switches itself off.

I took it to curry's and he did the same switch on whilst holding volume button and sent me home when it came on and he could open a page. Yes....when I got home it wouldn't turn on and when it did it froze.

I notice that under recent activity it showed windows defender as having found and dealt with malware. Could it be that something has got through? And if I can't get it to work just how do I deal with it?

It's always possible that something got through. The malware writers and the antivirus folks are always playing a game of who's on first. Bring it up in safe mode then run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free edition on it. (when you install make sure you deselect the trial of the commercial version or else it'll nag you after 30 days) You might have to install from a USB flash drive if it won't stay up long enough for the download. Safe mode should be more stable though.

It already has malware antispyware premium on it which is why it surprises me. As it's a tablet I don't know how to get safe mode and it is so hard to get it to come on and stay on or have it on for a few taps before it freezes.

Being a tablet doesn't really make it any different than some other PC, except that you don't normally have a keyboard and mouse connected. You can always plug a keyboard or mouse in if needed, though it's more elegant to use a hub and have them both plugged in at once.

Malwarebytes is pretty decent at keeping stuff at bay, but nothing is perfect. It should have disabled Windows Defender when it installed, so you shouldn't be running into conflicts. Still best to try scans in safe mode though.

    Easiest is:

    1. Press Windows logo key Windows logo key + I on your keyboard to open Settings. ...
    2. Select Update & security > Recovery.
    3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
    4. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Just do it quick enough on a start and you should be able to get it in before it freezes.
