Acer A1-840 Tablet suddenly requires password - what to do?

We have had the tablet for > 1 year, and did not have a screen password - all we did was swipe the screen to turn it on.

Now suddenly - without us knowingly doing anything - a number pad has appeared on the screen and a pin number is being requested. I have tried many number combinations to no effect. I can only enter 5 possible pins before I get a message telling me that I have to wait 30 seconds to retry.

This is bizarre. Has the tablet been hacked?? Could this happen "accidentally"? Any ideas on what we can do?

    Hi fbo,

I'm not sure how a password would get on there without someone setting it, but you should be able to recovery the tablet. Unfortunately, this would cause any data on the tablet to be lost.

We did a reset - sad to lose all our data, but don't see any other option. Heaven knows how this happened.
    Thank you for the advice.

I have seen similar behavior on installation of some apps. The app requires the extra security and if you just blaze past the screens during the install... Smiley Sad

This horrible thing just happened to me too.  I had just gotten my Tablet back for a charging issue (which they solved with a super heavy duty cord, unlike the oriignal).

Was working great.  Tech support told me no choice but to reset tablet.

Now my tablet is garbage.  I cannot download my apps (says not supported by my device, even though theyused to be on there).  Says they are "already installed", when clearly they are not.  Won't set up my email program for some reason.

I        realize i had NO CHOICE after this failure that caused a demand for a password which I did not set up, nor ever had on this tablet.  Used it in the morning.  Turned it off, then started it in the afternoon to find a floating clock and a password box.  A random event.  I don't believe ANY password can be set up without a 2 step process to be sure you type it in correctly so this is obviously a defect in this tablet.  Had it for 10 months.

Does ANYONE know how to update the OS?  I download the zip, and extract and now the tablet sees the msi file and the exe file but says 'file format not recognized'.  Yes, no way to actually RUN and exe file!  what do i do?  Acer support on Friday said i have to send it in AGAIN, only had it back 4 days.  Have an 860 tablet i'd like to update or reset because it runs like a slug, literally so slow you think it is not going to respond, and message pops up constantly telling me process service isn't responding, or this service isn't responding, etc.  However after this "reset" i am terrified, how to get my tablet back to it's updated system and running fast and efficitent like it did, before i try to "fix" the 860 as well.

I had this just recently. I asked Acer and they said could not of happened and I must have set a pin, which I didn't, I then tried McAfee because I had recently tried to install security I bought for my laptop and thought it may have been them, they rang me and told me to try several things which didn't work, putting it in safe mode and trying 111111 etc, in the end saying sorry but try ringing Acer.. then I looked online again and read something similar about an Acer projector having similar problem , use pin 1234, so I tried this and it worked!!!!!!!! I don't know if this is because I d messed around with it in safe mode beforehand or if the pin is just simply 1234. But my pad is now pin free again so suggest u try it. Good luck.
