Disgusted- £51 for windows 8.1 recovery disk from from aceruk! They feed off ICT illiterate like me

Aceraspire E1572P

Please can anyone help?

I had a conversation and followed some instructions from aceruk Phone 0371......... to fix my laptop, it's just over   2yrs old. The Gentleman said that there is nothing wrong with my drive, or someting like that) it just needs the Recovery Disc. I got my hand smacked as I did not make a Recovery! He said that I had to pay £51 for one. Can I get a disc cheaper or use someone elses- he didn't mention that I could.

Came with windows 8, on Start-up it prompted a windows 8.1 update. later in Jan 2016 I updated to Windows 10, by clicking a pop up link to windows 10- with no problems. However, near the windows 10 aniversary my computer stopped working, would not system restore or anything. Therefore I have just been through some tests on the acerUK phone line.

Incidently, another computer has done the same. My 12 year old child's computer (which is 9 months old, Desktop Acer Aspire T3-710, came with Windows 10, did't come with Recovery disc and I didn't make one) but is still under warranty from Curry's has done exactly the same thing, but this was a week later than mine. I phoned Knowhow and they went through Exactly the same test with me 'Recovery' as aceruk did and he told me to take it in to the store today as it is under warranty. He also mentioned, if I mentioned that it was strange that two computers (windows 10 anniversary date) stopped working that aceruk would send a recovery disc for pennies, postage etc.

The moral to my story is never  to buy another acer. Who in my position ever would?

In the meantime until I can save for another(Ill use my child's until I save enough for a new one (NOT ACER)

1)Can I get a disc for a couple of quid, say ebay, or can I use one from anywhere else, maybe a friend etc?

2) Are they difficult for someone like me to install?

3) Could aceruk be wrong and it might be something else, should I bury it and save and get a Dell or Apple MAC?

Thank you for your valuable time.

    1. Windows 8.1 is free in link below:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8

Acer doesn't support your E1-572P for Windows 10 Anniversary.

Prior versions of Windows 10 is free and in link below:

    https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool

Your BIOS and drivers are in link below (if you need them)

    http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

    2. I'm not sure.  If you have a problem, just start a new topic and ask a specific question about the problem you're experiencing.

    3. I doubt it.  No.

Edit: Lots of good videos in link below:

Edit2:  I hate that I'm a terrible auto mechanic and have to pay someone to fix my car/truck. But I do.   Smiley Wink

    Hello my friend...

I understand fully your fustrations as i have the exact laptop you are questioning the E1-572. Now i can happily tell you there is a work around to this but you will need another computer that works and you will have to buy a hdd enclosure or dock something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-5-Sata-to-USB-Hard-Drive-Caddy-HDD-Enclosure-Case-Laptop-and-PC-/390542411260?hash=item5aee2445fc:g:2a8AAOSwxCxT~T-I

Now if you have the above mentioned the first thing you need to do is remove the hard disk from your laptop and put into the enclosure or dock and connect this to the working computer. Then you can retrieve all your data safely back everything up you need. you might have to set up permissions with the enclosure but with an admin account you should not have an issue.

Once you have backed up then place your hard drive back into laptop. then on the computer you have that works visit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows8 to get windows 8 recovery media. Download the media creation tool then follow instructions and create you recovery dvd or usb.

PLEASE NOTE this means the bloat ware that came with your acer product will be gone no recovery option will exist only windows restore points etc. All software that came with your laptop will be gone. This is why acer are telling you that you need to buy the recovery discs as this will allow you to gain everything back including software.

The choice is yours. I had the same choice myself when my son dropped my laptop and my hdd went bad and i had not backed up and i made the choice of doing what i just explained above. i did not want to pay for the recovery media as i didn't use the software that came with my laptop. Hope this helps and let me know if you need any help.

PS ACER are good they are well put together laptops it is fustrating when things go wrong just takes a bit of time to put it right Smiley Happy

I just checked and saw that your E1-572P is not supported by Acer for Windows 10 Anniversary.  So you can't use Windows 10 Anniversary on your E1-572P.  You might be able to contact Microsoft and see if they will help you or confirm that Windows 10 Anniversary is not supported on your E1-572P.

    http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/windows10-update

So you can either install Windows 8.1 or use the tool below to get the "November" version of Windows 10.

If you decide to get the November version of Windows 10, you'll need to select the appropriate ISO version.  And then use rufus to create UEFI/GPT USB installation media.  Use the settings on the rufus home page.  And then you'll have to go in to your computer's BIOS settings and enable the F12 boot menu so you can boot your USB installation media.....and install November Windows 10.

Edit: if you clean install the November Windows 10 and have sleep or shutdown issues, then read the link below.

Thanks for your reply, but surely aceruk should have told me the bit about not supporting E1572P. I'm done with acer.

    Thanks
