WindowsUpdateDiagnostic

Having trouble updating to Windows 10. Get failures like 80070057 ? Try the Windows Update Diagnostic first.

If that is OK then check for and install all Microsoft updates for your current OS. If all is ok then go to the Upgrade Page . Down load and run the GetWindows10 app. This will determine if your PC is suitable.

If everything is OK, the install will start.

Note Remove all other bootable media (CD/DVD/Flash first. I have seen it take 6-8 hours after the download completes. It will show progress. Do not turn the computer off until done.

Also, if you're still receiving errors after performing the WUDiagnostic, you may need to disable your antivirus, antimalware, etc., security software during the install ONLY. Remember to re-enable it once the install is completed.

Just an observation but since Win10 came out I've been using a combination of Defender, Windows Firewall, and EMET (now 5.5) set "paranoid". Stays out of the way when am doing something I want but blocks everything else. Also have blocks at my gateway.

Also do not use the cloud but that is a personal matter since not always connected.

ps just upgraded a Win 7 SP1 PRO that had not been updated since 2014. Took three solid days (left kerchunking overnight). When began it would not update atol. Then kept stopping at 99%. Removal of existing AV helped but when Defender was able to update itself the end was in sight.

Overall wound up deleting over 3 GB of extraneous files (and had to change the BIOS for NX to work but that was minor).

Key is that sometimes it would just go away for hours & spend tens of minutes with a blank screen & pointer. Just let it have at it. If nothing happens overnight then think about looking in the error and WindowsUpdate logs.

I suspect people get tired of staring at nothing & reboot after a few minutes. Rong.
