I just purchase my predator laptop 17 and my c:/ 128GB SSD is filling up fast. Would like to know if it is a good idea to upgrade my SSD from 128gb to 256GB SSD and should I send it back to Acer to do the upgrade vice geek sq? What is your  suggestion?

Samsung 850 evo or 950 Pro if you've got the coin. Migrating your boot disk is kinda a PIA though.

I'm also interested in this, but I'd like to do it myself. Do u have a link on the two Samsung M2 SSDs (850 / 950 Pro) models that work, and a guide on how to copy the Win 10 OS on the new SSD?

I'm getting the G9-791-735A in about a week and want to replace the 128gb with a 256gb. Thanks!

I want to do an SSD upgrade as well, but the only tricky part is the main SSD has the OS and i don't know how to swap the OS from that SSD to the 950 PRO NVME SSD, because the two SSD slots are different in size...

Here's a couple pages with 850 EVOs and 950 Pros

    Amazon

    Newegg

To my knowledge any of those should work just fine. Be aware that if you get a 950 Pro it will only fit in one of the slots. I don't remember which but the top slot ideally would have an extension bracket that I've never been able to find. I've got two EVO's in mine right now and the top one is just loose and held down by the bottom case. If you clone your boot disk to the new, larger SSD, you'll have to resize the partition because you'll get an exact clone of the original and the extra storage won't be available. The tools I've found to do this are Minium Reflect and MiniTool Partition Wizard Pro Edition. I think MiniTool is a paid app but I was getting tired of trying to figure out how to do it with Reflect (though it says it's possible somehow).

Well well just saw THIS thread with info on the top bracket, so that's good.

Thanks Claustin. Reading some reviews, I was under the impression that the 850 / 950 were the same size (2280) and did not fit in the second slot (22110). Can you confirm that the regular 850 fits in the US spec Predator 17?

They fit the top slot but yes are too shot to be secured with a screw. Ideally, you would use the bracket in the thread I linked to. I've got two EVO's installed in mine right now, but the top one isn't secured other than the slot and is just held down by the bottom case cover. I'm going to be ordering that bracket now that I've found where to get it

Also, I think the 950 only fits in the bottom slot anyway. So if you went with the 950 you could put the old one in the top slot, do your clone operation, and then just remove the old one.

So the question is, if i put the main one on top and i put the 950 down, can i boot into OS through the second slot ontop and clone it to the first one, then boot back into a first one? if this works i might consider upgrading to 950!

I'm sure there's a way to do that. I think you have to set the active partition or something in disk management. Easiest way would be to clone it and then remove the old one.

Yeah but the problem i don't see any external adapter or usb adapter for the 950 PRO, i wanted to clone it using an external adapter to be on the safeside, there are many threads about SSD upgrades in the predator german forum, but its really hard for me to understand everything, even when i used translator it does not provide proper translation

i am hoping for somebody with good experience to provide help on this, because upgrading to NVME SSD is going to provide me a huge difference in speed and performance, and will enhance my experience with editing..

To upgrade, just download a viable a bootable drive cloning software. Clone drive -> image. Swap in the me SSD. Then clone image -> drive. Good to go!

I had a quick go at swapping the SSD on my new G9-791, with a new 500gb 850 eve. Cloned it with EasyUS Todo Backup, and swapped it in, but when booting it gave me a blue screen saying there was an error that needed recoving from. Since its late at night and I am new to upgrading laptops and UEFI systems, swaped the old SSD back in for now. Just wondering if this was likely a problem with the clone, or something I need to go through? Thanks

Can't really say as I didn't use EaseUS. I used Macrium Reflect. Only problem with that one is that it makes a 1 to 1 clone and I couldn't figure out how to resize the partition after cloning to get the full use of the new drive. I had to use a second program called MiniTool Partition Wizard for that. But even without resizing I didn't have a problem booting from the cloned drive using Reflect.

Tried it again with Macrium, and it boots into autorepair every time. The bios is seeing the samsung drive. Haven't changed any settings though, am I missing something. Haven't updated thr bios to 1.10, its still on 1.06, could this be the problem?

Probably not, but upgrading to 1.10 couldn't hurt. I did as soon as I could. Within a few minutes of taking it out of the box. Lol

I'm curios though. If going from a larger drive, to a smaller drive..... (Shrink partitions, old drive) -> partitions to images -> images to partitions (new drive -> (expand partitions as necessary)

I am officially an *****. I updated to bios 1.q0, however pretty sure the real problem was just me. When I made a new clone to try it again, I checked the settings closer and realised I had been making intelligent clones, instead of forensic ones. Booted fine straight away with correct type of clone! Feeling stupid, but thanks for the help guys!

I have to ask. Did you make a factory recovery disk/flash druve using Acer CareCenter?

I used a USB 3.0 16gb flash drive. Made it my recovery media before I did anything. Just in case.
