A factory reset will remove all your personal data, but you should be able to back it up first. My Google account keeps track of which apps I have installed and keeps copies of my pictures. I have all my music on a SD card, so no need to back that up. What you are at highest risk of losing is saved games and such, where the app keeps it's own data. Look into some of the more thorough backup apps to see f one will give you deep enough coverage.

I'm guessing though that a reset won't fix the problem. Most corrupted updates or installs only show when a specific app is running, and tend to show more random errors. I think to show as a vertical line in the center is much more likely to be hardware. Can you tell us how wide the line is? What color? Completely straight or a bit jagged?

Does it switch when you change from portrait to landscape or is it in exactly the same position, just sideways instead of vertical? If it moves we're looking at software, if it follows the physical screen then it's probably hardware.
