Flickering screen: ACER ICONIA W700

I have been using my Iconia W 700 for two years. Recently, after the machine has been on for 45mins to 1hour, a series of imagery like soap bubbles appear on the lower right corner of the screen. Thereafter, there is flickering of the screen. Images flies about on the screen. I had thought the system had virus and reloaded the OS but the problem persisted.

Any suggestion on what to do?

Thanks

Can you tell if there is a hot spot? I wonder if the graphics chips are getting too hot.

There appears to be hotspots. What can I do in case the graphic chipset are getting too hot?

I noted that if I turn off the machine and put it on after 30 minutes the flickering stopped.

Heat related issues are likely best left to a technician. If I were to guess I would say the heat sink is not in good contact with the chip, possibly due to the thermal grease hardening from age. The fix would then be to remove the heat sink, clean and regrease the contact area, and replace it. Since the W700 wasn't really designed as an upgradable product the hardware is likely not as easy to deal with as a desktop PC. It could also be a fan issue, or dust buildup within the airflow. Easiest would be the dust buildup, just disassemble and clean (compressed air outdoors so the dust doesn't get on everything). A bad fan might be diagnosable with software, but I can't remember if the fan has speed sensors on it.
