E5-571-37UB : switches off when the charger is plugged out/switched off.

Now this was working fine till a few hours ago.  Then suddenly I saw that the laptop was switched off.  Tried switching it on, it didn't power up.  After a while I connected the charger and then powered it up, and Presto !! It booted up.

Then switched off the charger, and the laptop too got switched off Smiley Sad

Now the position is that the battery meter shows 100% charged and the indicator shows blue light, but the moment I switch the charger, it shuts down.

Please help.

    Hello,

Have you performed a power reset?

Hello, tried the power reset after reading your post.  No change.  Doesn't power up without the battery in and charger powered on.  No charger, no power.  The battery is continuously showing 100% full.

Aside, the mouse has been acting up since last few days, double clicking when single-clicked and running away all over.  I assumed that it was a mouse problem and intend getting a new one.  Hope it is not related to this power problem.

I would try to load the default settings in the bios utility.

strange, but I don't seem to be ale to get into BIOS.  Power on, press "Del"  or F8 or space or anything, it just boots into my win8.1

No press [F2] when you'll see the Acer logo.

Did that.  Rebooted - it said "No bootable device".. went to BIOS, changed the option to "Legacy" from "UEF1" (or something like that), and it started ok.

But no change on the power situation, it still won't power on if the charger is not switched on.

    Try this:

    1. Go to Device Manager
    2. Expand Batteries
    3. Uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery
    4. Stay in Device Manager and Scan for hardware changes
      The device will be re-installed

    Has the battery level changed?

Tried that, no change.  It still won't power on unless the charger is plugged in and switched on.

Won't the battery get overheated if I keep the charger continuously on ? I use the laptop for 10-12 hrs per day.  Should I resort to switching it off every 3-4 hours ?

Anyway, what do you mean "Has the battery level changed ?"  Where do I check that ? What is the optimum battery level and what should it be ?

    Hello,

    1. Does your laptop work without the battery?
    2. Battery level = battery meter
    3. Is your laptop still under warranty?
    4. I think your actual battery is defective.

    A)

1 - It does not work without the battery.  Just noticed it when this problem arose, never thought of removing the battery earlier.

2- The laptop is not under warranty.

    B) New developments :

1 - Today sometimes the laptop just powered off.  Got switched off in the middle of working when both the lights were blue.

2 - Now, the battery meter is showing "0%, plugged in, charging" since 1 hour or so and that 0% is not going up.

    C) Does this model power up without the battery ?

B-2) The DC connection (plug/socket) is correct or loose?

Could you check the charge level of the battery with HMonitor (zipped version - no installation)

    C) You can do a test. No problems.

Now, once again the battery is fully charged.  The system does not power up unless the charger is plugged and switched on.  Also, the system gets switched off at random.

CPUID diagnostic is showing the following, hopefully the values are within normal level.

Could you look at the event viewer - check Critical?

    1. Win key + X
    2. Event Viewer

    Try also without battery.

    A) Looked at the Event Viewer.  All the Critical status errors are "Rebooted without cleanly shutting first" type.

    B) It DOES NOT power on without the battery.

    Update :

Took the laptop to a hardware guy.  He said the battery is bad and needs replacement.  The battery for E5 wasn't immediately available.  But he also did something that allows the laptop to run without the battery.  He said that it is some BIOS setting (it was done in my absence).

Is there some BIOS setting that enables/disables the battery ?

Anyway, will buy a new battery soon, am travelling.

    Hello,

So we have the same diagnostic: Defective battery.Smiley Happy

Is there some BIOS setting that enables/disables the battery ?

I saw no options in the bios setup utility.

Yes Sir, the same diagnosis Smiley Happy

I still don't know how he got the laptop to work directly without the battery.  I guess it is a trade secret for him that he doesn't want to share Smiley Happy.

Am in a different location today and have asked around for the battery.  It seems that original Acer battery is not available and the shopkeeper is asking around for a compatible battery.  Any suggestions regarding the same ?

    Thanks in advance.
