BCCODE 124 on Acer Aspire 5750

TammyMTammyM Posts: 8Member

I've checked out the forums fairly throughly but I still am not having any luck.

Right now I'm installing the WDK so I can decipher the minidmp so I'll add that shortly.

I'm running a Aspire 5750.  Windows 7 64-bit, Intel i5 2450M, 8 gb Dual Channel DDR3 @532 Mhz (7-7-7-20), ACER JE50_HR mobo, 232 WD hard drive.

I bought it second hand - I'm experienced enough that pulling parts and testing things doesn't bother me but this has me stumped.

When ever I stream video (and less often download software) it crashes with a 124 BSOD which generally means heat, overclocking instability or damaged hardware.

The fan wasn't working right - so I thought easy fix - replace the fan, clean everything up and redo the thermal paste.

Still happened.

So now it gets more problematic.

Stress tested the GPU with FurMark - 20 mins - no crashes.

Stress tested the CPU with Prime95 - 45 mins - no crashes/no errors/no warnings.

Temperature never goes above 70.

'Disabled' Turbo by setting the power for the processor to less than 100%.  Still happens.

Chkdsk (this is a fresh Windows install with nothing more than Chrome and some windows updates added) - hard disk comes back clean instantly. (I'll be replacing this in the future anyway with a 2TB M9T Samsung)

Memory test - had an 8 gig sodimm in it to begin with.  It was not 1066 and only one.  This tested out with an error in the first pass.  I thought AH HAH got you.  So I replaced it with the exact memory this beast calls for. Two sodimms - 4 gig each.  So that everything is optimal.  Did a memtest - all is good.  Nope still crashes.

So do I try to replace the HD?  Or give up and replace the mobo?  Or wait til the WDK downloads (which caused me to crash a few minutes ago.)  The fact that it crashes when I'm downloading or streaming makes me think it's the harddrive in spite of it testing clean.

Right now I'm unemployed so the unhelpful suggestion of buying a new laptop (as the parts I'd need are way less than a new laptop would be) isn't needed, Cat Happy

Update: I think it may be the HD. Was running the extended test through WD diagnostic and after 41 mins it crashed with that BSOD.  Near the end of the diagnostic.  Hmmm... Appears a new HD is in order.

Further update: reran the HDD diagnostic and it came back all clear. Just wanted to be thorough. I was really hoping that was it.

It was missing the driver for the Broadcom LAN - so I installed that. Still no success.

Crashed during WDK download (2nd time), when Line chat is running and any type of streaming.

Doesn't crash during stress testing - though I may run it over night tonight.

Without the WDK I can't even get a peak at what the mini dump says. Smiley Sad

    Any suggestions?

Anyone care to help me with this?  From my unskilled read, I am thinking processor or just hardware and I need to stress test more?

  • TammyMTammyM Posts: 8Member
I'm running Prime95 again to stress the processor - going to leave it until morning (6+ hours) - I will update with whether it crashes from that.

    Hey there Smiley Happy

I'd try testing the HDD on another functioning computer by connecting it as a secondary drive and confirm the quick and the extended test results. Getting the drive's S.M.A.R.T. raw values is also a good idea. If you have trouble reading them feel free to post them here.

Make sure all drivers and OS updates are properly installed and are up-to-date.

Post back with the stress test results. You may also want to check your memory if it's performing properly. Checking for Memory Leaks is also a good idea.

Thanks for the help Captain WD. I just finished another 6.5 hour stress test on Prime 95. 0 errors, 0 warnings, 0 crashes. So fairly certain the CPU is clear.

I'd already checked all the drivers - that's when I discovered that the Broadcom LAN driver was missing. They are all up to date and functioning properly.

The RAM is new but that doesn't mean much so I'll try another 8 pass test next.
  • TammyMTammyM Posts: 8Member
The other thing I want to mention is that I can provoke a 124 bsod in under 5 minutes (sometimes it's instant) by streaming video but so far none of the tests (except for the HDD diagnostic) has provoked the BSOD so the difference between video streaming and the tests (what does video streaming use that the stress tests don't) do may narrow down the fault.
  • TammyMTammyM Posts: 8Member

Okay - ran an 8 pass memory diagnostic - the memory came back as clean - no errors.

    So that leaves three possibilities:

    Harddrive

    Processor

Motherboard (includes issues with the GPU)

I'm going to try stressing the GPU one more time for a longer duration and then pull the harddrive - put it into a shell and try running the diagnostic on it again from my daughter's laptop. I'll see if I can get the raw SMART data from the WD diagnostic program.

To be clear I've run all the Windows updates available as well.

    You are most welcome!

If the CPU is handling the stress tests well and there are no crashes or extreme temperatures it should not be the one causing the problem.

For the storage drive, if it passes the extended tests and the S.M.A.R.T. status is good then it shouldn't be it either.

It may be a good idea to contact Acer's live support directly.
