No internet connection

Recently I have been unable to connect to the internet.  All was ok before that. No connections are shown as available and when I try to set up a network I get message that no hardware is detected.  I have rebooted mny times, checked everything is enabled.  Device Manager says the apaptor is working.  I have uninsalled the adaptor and restarted, I have downloaded and installed latest driver from this web site, also one from Realtek, and others all with no result. Used system restore. Red X still shown in task bar.  I have emailed the problem (and others) twice to Acer Support and had no response.  So I am in despair having spent many hours trying to sort out, and am about to give up and return the device to the seller.  It is just a few months old.  An Aspire 10E runninng Windows 10.  It is my Wife's machine, and while it is not connecting I have to let her use this one of mine!

Right click on the network icon in the tray. Select "Troubleshoot Problems" Diagnostics will run. See if anything changes.

Thanks Ace.  Already tried that several times.  It says it cannot identify the problem. PJ

Problem is that I do not know what you have done. My next step would be to go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network Connections & see if the adapter is listed. If it is it may be disabled.

Also I believe the antenna can be turned on/off from the keyboard with FN-F(key) but I forget which (F3 ? Do not have a 10). That would have the same effect.

Does it act like a signal strength issue? Do wireless networks show up, but just fail to connect or are the networks not showing? Does it work with a different wireless hotspot?

    Padgett  Thanks.

I have tried all the obvious things, most of which are suggested for similar questions on this forum.  The adaptor is listed, is is said to be working properly.  Wi fi is turned on.  There are no networks of any sort listed.  There is a red x over the network icon in the task bar.  Trying to set up a network yeilds 'no communications hardware detected'.  I have uninstalled the adaptor and reinstalled it, have installed the latest drivers from Acer and from Realtek. I cannot think of anything more to do.  I get the impression that the problem stems from an automatic Realtek driver update that failed to install.  Other than that, all indications are that there has been a hardware failure. No.  There is no sign of any connection whatsoever.  It is as though the adaptor has gone, except that Device Manager says it is working properly. PJ

Next thing I would do is to run MSINFO32 and go to Components>Network>Adapter & look for a section on your wireless adapter ("Wireless Lan Card" - NOT any that say "Microsoft"). If it is there, please cut and paste to a reply.

Done that.  The LAN card is not listed under network>adaptor.  Its only mention in System info is for IRQ69.

At this point I'd probably save and clear out the Event Viewer (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer ), reboot, and look for errors. Is about the only thing that is left.

Try taking the device and setting it right next to the router and see if it'll see anything there. It could be as simple as disconnected antennas.

I havn't looked there before.  There are lots of errors and information entries, a lot from before this problem started so probably not important.  I saved the original then deleted it all and restarted as you suggested, and now there are lots of infomation entries and one error.  Originally there were entries about the Realtek adaptor but none now.  I will transfer the copied original and new files to this laptop and send to you, in case there is anything there that helps. Will try to send later or tomorrow morning.

Ok Padgett, done that.  There were numerous error and information entries in the original Event Viewer, soe of the more recent are below.  I cleared the files and restarted as you suggested and the recent files are included below also.  I hoped to attach the whole file to this post, but cannot see how to do that, so hope the extracts might be of some help.

Here are some of the more recent entries from the original event viewer.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help.  In the absence of any solution I have reluctantly followed Support's advice and done a factory reset.  Very much a last ditch measure that is sure to raise more problems thanit solves. Sure enough, the internet issue is solved and working ok, but in the process I have lost access to my separable hard drive.  This does not appear as a drive an more,  i disk management is is shown as unknown, not initiialised and unallocated.  DISKPART says it is online.  Device Manager reckons it is ok.  All options to initialise in Disk Management are greyed out.  I would appreciate having any advice please.

Sounds like a mythconfiguration. This article points to a recommended path but sould like a conflict between Win 10 and the device driver. Are you running Windows 10-64 and do you have the latest (10586) update ?

    Hi Padgett

It was Windows 10-32.  The update to 10586 failed many times, either due to lack of space (would not use the other drives) or the battery ran out due to the random charging system that meant charging stopped even though securely plugged in.

However I have now installed 10586 using media creation tool as recommended eksewhere here.  That worked ok although I had to watch the battery all the time.  Rebooting was anothe issue.  Every problem imaginable and it took many hard reboots to get things apparently ok.  BUT still no hard drive.  500 mb of storage still missing.  Oddly, the charging problem MAY have been corrected but it is early to tell.

The 3 drivers for the hard drive are all in their place in System 32. I downloaded the Western Digital diagnostics tool.  This checked the drive. It said the quick check had been passed, but when I tried the more detailed check it stopped almost immediately saying there were too many bad sectors to proceed.

There is not any opportunity to try reformatting the drive in case that worked.  So it all looks pretty fatal - too many problems with this device to resolve so many thanks to Acer and Microsoft combined for wasting so many hours of my time.  Acer Support have woken up and said I should return the unit to them for repair.  Blow that.  It is going back to QVC fior refund.  I did try to discourage my wife from buying this thing, but she was swayd=ed by the colour of the lid.  A lesson for all of us.

Many thanks for trying to help.

PS My own old Iconia A500 with Android is a great device and still works well, it has been around the world with me and never given a moment's worry.  I wonder why Acer could not keep that standard up.

Well you could go to Amazon and check out the R3-131T-P344. 64 Bit, 4GB ram, 500 GB HDD. 1920x1080 on external monitor. Don't know how long the price is going to last but mine is a hot rod & upgrades are easy. (/plug)

    Hey there PJP27,

What is the drive's model that is failing the extended test of the WD DLG? A screenshot of the fail message could be useful. I would verify that result with a third-party tool that can give you the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status and see what they can tell you about the drive's condition. If you are not sure how to read them feel free to post them here!

If you have data on the drive that you'd want to keep I'd strongly suggest that you do not attempt any data recovery or send the drive anywhere else but to a data recovery company. Any attempt might further damage the drive and cause permanent data loss.

    Post back with some progress!
