r7-571 display backlight works but no picture

On board display is lit up but blank. External display works fine so does touch screen. Do I just need to replace the screen?

Do you see something if you move slowly the onboard screen (nearly close/open and reversly)?

I gave that a try. I also removed the bottom panel to double check the connectors. Both are attached. Can the backlight still work even if there is no picture on the display?

Did you only remove the metal support or the back cover of the screen? - Can the backlight still work even if there is no picture on the display?
Yes if you look the attachment (yours), the IC (controllers) are independent. - I would check the eDP connector directly connected on the LCD panel.
You'll have to disassemble the screen. May be you'll need a little tutorial.
