Where is com4

I recently had to reinstall windows 7 starter.  I had devices using com3 and com4 before, now it can only find com3.  I tried adding a legacy device, got a com4 port installed, but it used a different driver and wouldn't work.  How can I get com4 working again?  (And why do I have to, shouldn't it know its own ports?)  It's an Aspire One model 532H running windows 7 starter.

I'm unsure what / why this is an issue, as the Aspire One 532h does not have a serial port.

What is using COM 4 ?

Did you reinstall the system with eRecovery?

I may have the model wrong. Mine has three USB ports, two on the left and one on the right. When I plug the first device in, it assigns it com3. When I plug the second device in, it doesn't assign it anything. On one attempt, it installed it as "Other devices", but didn't give it a com port assignment, so it won't work. Before I had to reinstall Windows, the first device was plugged into the back USB port on the left side and assigned com3, and the second device was plugged into the forward USB port on the left side and assigned com4. I've tried plugging this device into all of the USB ports and it will not be recognized and installed as it was before. Yes, I did reinstall with e-recovery. These devices are ham radio interfaces, and I had no trouble installing them the first time (on the original installation of windows).

    OK, I see.

You have a USB to serial device that you are connecting.  A "HAM Radio interface".

When you connect the device, you should see if in Device Manager.

Right click the device and go to Properties.

Click on the Port Settings tab.

    Click the Advanced button.

At the bottom of the Advanced Settings page is "COM Port Number:"

Set the device to the appropriate COM Port.

That's about all the support I'm going to be able to provide for these devices.  You may want to talk to the manufacturer to see if they have any additional suggestions.
