E 17 E5-772G - Adding a second HD in the 9.5mm slot

Is there an official drive tray we can purchase from ACER? Is there a sata cable that connects to the empty port on the motherboard? The existing tray place holder doesn't have a removable bezel, so any 3rd party tray doesn't look great. Finding the correct cable is my biggest obstacle, getting it to look nice is secondary. It'd be really nice if they just sold a drive tray.

    Greetings ahrenl

Just spent the better part of an hour with acer live chat ...talked to Samuel G great guy gave a 18oo num talked to a very friendly support person at the first number that gave me the parts department and Mark there was awesome but sadly they do not have said thing and actually said cant be done and they just researched this for someone else ...was that you ???

Im running  A SILVERSTONE TS08 9.5mm caddy IN MY E15 and want to trim the blanker bezel for dvd and JB weld it to the caddy so it looks factory nice Smiley Happy i would post some pics but in another thread the pic of the part was installed in my laptop and blocked ...I was not told why so if a MOD could let me know if its ok  then i will show it .

Message me if you want the number for acer parts !

    Cheers

    Hi Matt,

It was likely me. I also spoke with the sales people and they claim that a HDD can't be installed in my version, but that there is a DVD drive that can be. Since there should be no difference, I ordered the DVD drive to see connector it is using. I have a generic 9.5mm -> 2.5" caddy but I really wanted to have a matching bezel and I wanted to make sure I had the correct internal cable. I've already pulled it apart to replace the HDD with an SSD and add a second DIMM, and I confirmed the existence of the SATA port, but there no way a factory DVD drive could slide in and connect to it, but I guess we'll see. I figure, worst case, I'll have the option of using the DVD drive in the future.

Thanks for the info on your unit. I've heard (Amazon reviews comments) that the 15" version has an easier time hooking these up. For instance, I believe you can pull the bottom plate off your system, whereas the 17" has to remove the keyboard, and then remove the motherboard in order to access the DIMMs. Let me know what you end up doing with the "factory nice" look. I've considered just breaking out the dremel myself. Smiley Wink

Hey.... all the new laptops do not have access ports and i dont think its diff from 17 to 15 myself so i had to use a guitar pic after taking out all the bottom screws to break the two halfs apart  and only broke one clip but everything seems fine SSD was easy just lifted up keyboard and slid old out and new in ...ram was a bugger first time disconecting those cables for me flip mobo over ect ect but all is good now  A4 R3 16 GB G skill and 240 GB SSD with the original 1TB in the caddy now ... it works but I see a couple limitations in it ... great streamer now but by no means a gamer we keep learning thou Smiley Happy

20151216_192449-1.jpgMy drive caddy has a slim line connector. I think that might be a 3.5" desktop drive.

So, looking closely at the pictures, I'm not so sure there is an extra SATA port. It might actually just be a USB port. Perhaps I need a slimline SATA to USB cable?

That actually from the top and i had to download your pic to zoom it looks like some sort of ribon cable connector to me , if you look at right middle edge of my mobo it has the slimline sata port pointed out and I have a 1 tb hdd plugged in with a caddy.. not installed in this pic of coarsenex 069.jpg

So do you think the red circled port is not a USB header? I've been looking for a slimline to internal ribon SATA cable, but it seems like they are specific to each laptop brand. I was hoping ACER was going to send me one with the DVD drive I've tried to purchase, but so far, no sign of the drive. I don't see any way it could just slide right in and hook up given the plastic blocker in the way. That won't be a problem for me as I'll just take it apart again, but I'm surprised they would sell it to an end user with the only way for it to work is through disasembly.

Man i have done some searching and even went to a local repairshop with your pic and that guy said the cable should be there or it comes with the drive . All i could find is a ribbon to sata thats doubles the port on ODD1 for diff vendors gaming rig. this would not fit in a slim case acer.images.jpg

So I found something on Amazon, and just decided to order it. I'm not confident they're ever going to send that DVD drive. Still haven't charged me for it.

Funny running your exact model number did not show that but thats what you need if it does not come with the drive good find man !! made for acer, its important to note that ribbons have two diff spans on the lines 1mm  and.5 mm so aftermarket could be hit and miss just fyi on that!

So I did finally get the DVD drive shipped to me. It does come with a separate face plate that matches the outer car that fits on generic hard drive holders. Also came with a different came, this one has narrower wires like you mentioned.

Thanks for the research you guys did. I just bought a E5-77G and have plans to do the SSD upgrade and keep the 1TB drive for storage. Seems like a pretty good bang for the $. Any other tips, parts suggestions, etc for the update? I did look into my little Acer V5-131 and saw the ribbon cable attached to the MB for the HD. I'm used to working on desktops and haven't messed with lappies much except to fix fans, power plugs, good cleanings, add some memory, etc. Always interesting with diff mfg how to get into the little beasts.

Acer has been good to me for quite a few years with an old Acer Aspire 3102 still working running Linux.

I'll probably wait for the 30 day return to expire before tearing into it and see if it's a "good" machine. Hope Win10 doesn't make me crazy; sorry I'm a bit of a Linux junkie.

    Thanks again -

Welcome to the forums combridge ...just getting into laptops myself have been playing with this one since the fall , best bang for the buck is to put in ssd and move the blue drive to a caddy if your board supports it  or usb three enclosure what ever suits budget and  needs i guess.replacing with ssd only will also increase batt life by more than 20% to as apposed torunning two hdds all the time .I slide mine in and out as needed.

    Cheers

    Food for thought !

With a bit of luck is your E17 E5-772G mainboard (like mine) equipped with a SSD M.2 slot (also SATA-600) next to the two memory slots (at the back of the mainboard ;-)  )

    It takes SSD M.2 SATA type modules such as Samsung 850 EVO M.2 120GB / 250GB / 500GB

I installed the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250GB module and replaced the standard 1TB HDD with a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB ('small' system partition, remainder data partition). The M.2 SSD is for resilience in case the 850 PRO is failing (I have copied that small system partition with Paragon Harddisk Manager - option OS migration - to the M.2). You can selectively choose the boot disk in the BIOS.

Bit of work but if you follow the service manual pages not too difficult to complete.

    All works fine :-)
