Touchpad no power Aspire 5542

No power to touchpad.  Recent upgrade to windows 10.  Usually I use peripheral mouse so I cannot say if issue was there before upgrade.  I have uninstalled/installed drivers, uninstalled mouse from device manager, disconnected power and battery and held the power button. This unit has an off-on button to the right of the touchpad that would light up to indicate the touchpad is off. Keyboard works.  I have opened the unit to make sure the data cables are correctly connected.  There is no evidence of any corrosion or burnt cables. Every peripheral mouse works fine.

Please help?

Does device mgr show any abnormalities? Does the touchpad show up under human interface devices and/or mice and other pointing devices? Have you tried to toggle the touchpad on/off with the Fn+F7 key combo? Run "main.cpl" and check the various menus and settings for the touchpad.

No abnormalities in device manager.  Touchpad does not show up under human interface devices.  the Fn+F7 button is the same thing as the button to the right of the touchpad which will enable/disable the touchpad (yes, I've tried).  There is nothing in the mouse properties for me to select/deselect for the touchpad.

The button to the right of the touchpad on this model will light up to indicate the touchpad is turned off.  Pressing that button does nothing.  It is like there is suddenly no power to the touchpad.

Since device mgr doesn't detect the touchpad, I'm gonna guess its ribbon/cable connectors to the motherboard somehow came  loose or need re-seating. To access them. the keyboard and a cover must be removed. Google the keywords, "5542", "youtube", "touchpad" to show how it's done on similar models. Unfortunately, it's a frustrating disassembly procedure as plastic clips holding the keyboard down on its top edge and sides are not easy to dislodge with a putty knife and tend to snap off as they have on my own laptop. However, black electrician tape adequately serves the purpose of these clips on re-assembly and is hardly noticeable.

Besides the ribbon, did you also happen to notice a pair of wires (black/red) from the touchpad area to the motherboard?

Yes.  That is located near the top of the board.  I have disconnected/reconnected this as well, but to no avail.

Can you see if the other end of that pair uses a connector at or soldered into the touchpad controller board? Replacement boards seem to be available for about $35 from Amazon vendors.
