It almost sounds like you may need to Uninstall your sound in Device Manager, Then re install your sound driver that you can get off acer support page for your device. IF that don't work for some reason windows isn't finding your laptop speakers...

Here is your systems DL page http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers/3279;-;Aspire%205742Z you can pick 7 32 or 64bit what ever you are running.

have you tried to plug in some headphones or something to see if it changes and works though them?

Hey Ron. It is hard at times to make a guess at what could be wrong!

I am wondering with that idea failing. Has there been any type of Upgrades to your system that would require your system being taken apart? I don't mean just a HDD or Ram change as that can be accessed I think if I remember from the bottom of the sytem with the Wifi in the Center of it...

It almost sounds like something isn't working inside the system anymore. It could be if there was some type of Service done to your system that the wire or a Paper ribbion cable may have been damaged or something wrong with your computer or damaged case at all?

I wonder have you tried to connect your HDMI and see if there is any sound that comes from that?
