Acer V7 ZQY: battery (AP13B8K) suddenly dead

Hi,

This laptop is a little more than one year old.

The battery was charging from 30% to something like 70% when I realized that the percentage did not increase any more.

I could read battery informations (state of charge, voltage etc) but it did not charge and when removing the AC power, the laptop shut off immediately.

This happened a few months ago. I found some threads saying that it might be a bios issue but the upgrade software does not want to run: it says I must have more than 30% battery left and now the battery is below that level !!!

I removed the battery from the laptop and tried to activate it by putting a 100 Ohm resistor between ground and the green wire next to the red one (the battery sends a short pulse here every second). The voltage on the red wire is still zero. So either this is not the correct activation method or the solid state switch in the battery is dead.

When the battery is in the laptop, the voltage between the red and black wires is 0.8V...

So battery dead ? Bios problem (if yes how can I upgrade ?) ? Mainboard failure ?

Thanks in advance if you have any clue or advice...

Benoit

    Hi Laurent,

Thank you for your help !

I just received an installed a new battery that I ordered on a chineese web store (whose name contains shop battery and laptop...). The battery has exactly the same reference (AP13B8K (4ICP6/60/80)). It has the same wiring, same sticker on the left (the sticker wiith Acer brand is missing however).

It works: the laptop now runs without mains and with mains it says the battery is charging. I hope it will last longer than the first one.

What is the voltage with the AC adapter plugged?

    Hello Laurent,

    Thank you for your question.

Actually, 0.8 Volts is the voltage with the AC adapter plugged in. When the AC adapter is removed, the voltage slowly drops to zero (probably a capacitor discharging through the voltmeter).

It would really help to know what is the procedure to activate the battery pack (resistor between two wires or more complex procedure involving codes on the smbus). Once activated, I could for sure test if the battery is is ok or not.

    Hello Benoit,

What is the terminal voltage of the cable DC-IN?

    Hello Laurent,

If you mean the output of the AC power supply, this is 19.51 Volts.

The laptop works perfectly with the AC power supply plugged in and when the battery pack stopped working, the battery monitor said that the battery was 70% full and something near 16V for the battery voltage.

    Hello Benoit,

    1. What model do you own exactly? "V7 ZQY"??
    2. Could you give me the first ten characters of the computer serial number (S/N)? Only the first ten.

    Remark:

Honestly I think the battery is defective but I will need more information...

    Hi Laurent,

    Thank you again.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire v7 series, model number ZQY.

The serial number starts with NXM B7E F00 1

    Hello Benoit,

I found no official procedure about the activation of the battery.Smiley Frustrated

Your laptop is an Aspire V7-482P-34014G52Tii.

I can only give you the part numbers of the original batteries:

I can add that, to test if the battery is ok or dead, the following procedure helps:

Connect a 100 Ohm resistor between ground (black wire) and the leftmost green wire (when red wires are on the left and black wires on the right).

Without a resistor a multimeter or oscilloscope should see periodic voltage spikes between this green wire and the black one (the battery checks if it is connected to something)

When the 100 ohm resistor is connected, you should read the battery voltage between red and black wires (15V or so).

If not, the battery pack is dead (like my previous one)
