Black Screen on boot - Aspire V5-122p

Computer is the Acer Aspire V5-122p
The behavior is: After pressing the power button to turn on the computer, the keyboard backlight and LED indicators and the fan all turn on, but the screen is black.
I have tried connecting to external monitor with same result.
There is no Acer logo, no blinking cursor, nor anything appearing on the screen.
When the computer is turned on (without AC cord plugged in), and I plug in the AC power cord, I hear one 'beep' as the cord is plugged in.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

- Have you tried a battery reset with a paperclip on the bottom?
- Have you recently performed an update of the bios?

1. I didn't know about the battery reset, but I did just now try to do that - held a paperclip in a tiny hole on the bottom of my computer. No change
2. I did not do anything with the bios before this happened. I do not know why this happened.
