Can I use the PS/2 device ports on a AT3-605-UR21?

This unit comes with legacy PS/2 ports for the mourse and keyboard. When I plug in either, they devices don't work leading me to think they're not activated. I'm trying to free up rear USB ports.

How do activate them or be able to tell if they are configurable ?

    FIXED !!!

Ports work just fine. I was able to find an old PS/2 keyboard/mouse and directly connect them.

Turns out USB to PS/2 port adapters do NOT work unless they are plugged in to specifically designed "combi" signal devices. These simple adapters do not and will never work, even though the products do not disclose this fact. It is revealed in the other purchasers comments where several others got fooled into buying these.

Fortunately, I'm only out ten bucks...but still.

Thanks very much to all that reponded !!

If they are there in the back of the computer they should work. Question for you? Did you try and plug them in HOT Swap or did you plug them in and then turn on your computer?

If you tried to do it HOTSWAP it wouldn't work as the Computer looks for the devices when you start your computer..... So you turn off computer, Plug in mouse and Keyboard and turn on and should be there... If not I know that some computers have the ability to turn on or off the Lagecy PS/2 ports in Bios. You could look there and see if there is maybe a toggle that you can click to get them to turn back on. Maybe set to auto if it is an option...

If that don't work I would if you feel like you are able to look in your Registery... regedit and look for this info

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt,

edit the Start value and set it to a hex or decimal value of 1. -> Reboot and Ps/2 should work now

If it don't let me know then I know next time that for some reason on the 605 they are turned off. But for me in theroy if the ports are there they would be able to be used... I have a few that came with USB Keyboard and Mouse but has the PS/2 ports, I used the PS/2 Ports because I have a KVM Hubs that uses them..

    Hi James :

    Thanks for the response !

I have checked the BIOS and the only refence to PS/2 posts is a power wake-up on PS/2 keyboard or mouse movement.

I tried to power off, chnage the ports and power on and nothing. Even the num lock light is not lit. So, no +5v going to the keyboard. I even swapped the connectors to see it I them backwards with the same results.

Also, in the device list there is no entery for a PS/2 device, keyboard or mouse, only HID. Untill its listed there, it won't get recognized.

    Still hoping though....

I also tried the Registry change without any effect.

Sorry that just stumps me. I did a search an dlooked over some reviews for your machine and found some strange things with your system. But one user stated they didn't like the Keyboard that came with the system and did swap it our for a PS/2 Emachine one and was happy cause it freed up a USB... So I am not sure what the deal with your Keyboard is? Is it a NEW maybe some odd Tech type made for a Split Keyboard Mouse connection? Have a different PS/2 Keyboard you could try? Other then that, I am sorry I was not able to give you better info to help you with the problem...

    Good Luck

    Spoiler
I have a different solution. The BIOS handles the PS/2 natively, but it's quite flaky, so here is what I have to do to key my Model M to work (One of 7 I have which I hope will last me the rest of my life) on Win7 (my (old) Terabyte Linux backup software sees the PS/2 just fine and doesn't see the USB 3.0 at all.):

Win 7 wouldn't let me edit that i8042prt value. Turns out there's something funky in the BIOS.

My motherboard is a new MSI Z87-G45 with the stupid fancy BIOS

To get Win7 to use PS/2 keyboard, boot to BIOS (have to perform each time you change a piece of hardware, SATA, Graphics card, etc.) Procedure:

    1. shutdown.
    2. Plug in both USB keyboard and PS/2 keyboard
    3. Boot to BIOS (hitting del on my USB keyboard, because it won't see the PS/2 keyboard)
    4. Hot unplug the USB keyboard while in the BIOS
    5. Exit the BIOS with the "Save and Exit" BIOS option (via USB mouse)
    6. Win7 can see the PS/2 keyboard upon reboot.

This appears to be necessary every time the BIOS see a new SATA device. It does not appear to be necessary when you plug in a new USB device.

May work and I hope it does, I did see some of that info, after my research however seeing it was all un related hardware I wasn't sure that it was something that could work. I never thought about going to Bios with both USB/PS/2 connected. I did find a post, that was of same Model where the user was happy they got the keyboard working and was happy they freed up a port. IF this works for the OP then I can add it to my NOTES of what may work incase another person has same type issue in the future. Sadly I never did read to the bottom of that post seeing it was about other BYO systems. Thanks for the Info.
