HI,
Having trouble here
Upgraded to Win 10 worked for a while
then blacking out

Did a factory restore back to Win 8
Reboots after 5 mins

Which means I don't have time to run tests
Also setting boot order to DVD/CD fails to boot to CD
where I could also run some hardware tests ..

Really stuck on this one ..

    Probably need more info.

Are you on Windows 8.1 now?

Can you try to reset again using alt-f10?

Can you try to reset again using Shift-restart

I'm not sure why you changed to boot order.  Doesn't your BIOS have a "Boot Menu" that you can enable?

Do you need to backup your files?

Are you interested in a clean install?

Do you know how to access a command prompt?

Do you want to wipe the drive with diskpart clean and start over?

Did you make a USB factory default recovery drive prior to upgrading to Windows 10?

Do you think you'd be able to create a USB factory default recovery drive?

On the vanilla Windows 10 USB media, they have Windows Memory Diagnostic.  But you can also access Windows Memory Diagnostic by searching for "Windows Memory Diagnostic"  on your computer.

Have you tried a different electrical outlet?

Have you recently added any hardware?  Have you tried disconnecting everything from the USB ports (except for your mouse and keyboard)

Have you tried loading the BIOS default (F9) and then save/exit (F10).

If you can create a USB factory default recovery drive, and use it, I would recommend selecting "yes, repartition the drive".

You can purchase your factory default recovery media from Acer store if you didn't create a factory default USB drive and can no longer do that.....and prefer that over a vanilla copy of windows.

    Thanks
I tried a number of those solutions

managed to save data via xcopy in a dos prompt ( win 10 repair )

went for a factory reinstall which installed win 8

then I had all the issues of finding an admin command prompt in win 8
night mare ( esp with the PC rebooting every 3-5 mins )

Boot Order was to change it to DVD so i can use tools

Upshot is I tried a 630W Thermatake PSU on it

    ( is 300 W the max for these socket FM2's  ?? ))

think I've blown the motherboard .. no noises .. at all

just with PSU Keyboard , memory, CPU , graphics

    its dead ..

stipped it of parts ( good parts ) like a 1 TB HD

    and am awaiting buying a FM2 m/board

still can't really be sure what was/is the issue

Don't think it was heat, I cleaned the fan

no tell-tale signs in event viewer as to causing the crash .

checked drive for error s .. passed

couldn't due a memtest due to the rebooting issue
and inability to boot to a CD drive

altogether quite frustrating .... and unrewarding ..

still don't really know what was causing the reboot issue .

    Thanks for you detailed reply

    hi JordanB

Alas even with a new motherboard i'm getting the same darn thing
reinstall windows ( this time used partition magic to wipe drive completely)
then just after finalising settings this happens:

PC just keeps restarting after between 1 and 5 mins.
no time to hook up to internet, or load CD drivers

PC gets stuck , gives options to reset/refresh .. none of which resolves.

No health check or disk error is finding any issues.
curretly I'm using Hiren's Boot and running memtest86+
( fully expect this to pass )

its not a temperature issue i don't think
BIOS settings allow to switch the CPU fan to higher or lower settings

This leaves the HDD .. PSU ..
    or running more tests
trying to get to a place where i can load windows with no drivers
as its only in windows the reboots are happening

Just wish I could narrow down what causes windows to reboot
and go through them 1 by 1 .

In your experience, what's it likely to be?

If I were trying to figure out if I had a hardware problem, I would put the hardware back to factory condition including the power supply.

Then I would wipe the HDD with diskpart clean, and then I would go in to BIOS settings and load BIOS defaults F9 and then save/exit F10. and then install from my USB recovery drive that I made when I first bought the computer.  If I didn't make a USB recovery drive, I would order my recovery software from Acer Store.  I'm not saying that partition magic is causing your problems, but I would just stick with the microsoft tools for now.

To gain access to a command prompt (and thus diskpart), you can create windows 8.1 or windows 10 installation media and when you boot the media and see the screen below, press SHIFT-F10.

    windows10shiftF10.png

Once you gain access to a command prompt, type diskpart, list disk, select disk ?, clean, exit, exit.  Be sure you don't select the wrong disk.

I don't know what BIOS your computer came from the factory with and I don't know if you have Richland.

I don't see any Windows 10 drivers for your computer yet Acer lists it as supporting Windows 10 so not sure what to think there, but definitely stick with the orginal factory software until you get this figured out.

Note:  Be sure you create UEFI/GPT windows installation media and your UEFI/BIOS is in UEFI default mode.  Don't partiton or format your HDD manually.  You want the entire drive to be unallocated space.  Your recovery media will automatically partition and format the HDD for you.

    Jordan

IO'm thinking its a software problem
as I can't get beyond the welcome screen

something is going wrong with the BOOT loader

as not seeing the password prompt screen

    just rebooting

( its a new mobo, and I've no factory reset
I've wiped the whole drive completely
this doesn't worry me and I can reinstall all the drivers
    from the website  )

trying to get the cleanest install possible .

this is the closest i have got to fixing it:

"Try fix the boot from the time that you can access troubleshooter.

How to fix windows boot fail

    1. Go to Windows repair an open CMD
    2. Type: bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    3. C:
    4. cd boot
    5. attrib bcd -s -h -r
    6. ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    7. bootrec /RebuildBcd
    8. To installation list type Yes "

I momentarily saw the password prompt screen
    then reboot Smiley Sad

I spent more time than I really have typing those instructions for you.....and you're not even going to attempt them.

I'm done here.  There's not enough info for me to help you.  Good luck.

Hey I've tried all of it
    I don't have an SDD

    Windows7-2008-11-04-14-55-06.jpg

This is where I'm stuck, for example ( that's a win7 above ) finding which driver to load
    to stop the reboots .
and its mental because I don't know what UEFI is or legacy or AHCI
just know I need a mobo driver SATA controller ..

I'm doing clean boots like you say , not formatting or partitioning ..

( I get this ***** always when its an AMD chip , never an Intel )

    Try Windows 10.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    Or try Windows 8.1

You said you replaced the motherboard, but I have no idea what motherboard you bought.  Not enough info.

I managed to flash the BIOS this morning of new mobo
and have enabled S.M.A.R.T in BIOS

Do you know of anything I can try at the comand prompt

Honestly I don't have any idea what the problem is.  I don't know if you're using retail Windows 8.1 or retail Windows 10 since your Acer OEM license was tied to the motherboard on your original motherboard.  If you're trying to install Windows 7, you8'll need to go in to BIOS and disable secure boot.  But I don't even know what version of Windows 7 you're trying to install.

If you can install Windows, you can boot the Windows media, and click on Repair Your Computer....and then navigate in menu to Startup options to get in to Safe Mode.  If you successfully boot in to safe mode, then restart your computer.  But again, I don't really understand the problem to begin with.

Maybe someone else can give you some ideas.  I'm out of ideas.  Sorry.
