NEW: Weird sound when turning ON my monitor first thing in the morning

I don't put my computer to sleep.  I just turn off the monitor and let the computer run all night so it is basically a 24x7 rig.   So there is no sleep mode to deal with.

The last 3 mornings when I turned on the computer it sound like there is a "crackling" coming from the back of the monitor. To be honest it sounds like speaker feed back or static electricity.  I do not have the speakers plugged in, nor do I use them.  I'm not even sure how to turn them off (DTS in the montor settings)?

So far, I haven't seen any distortion, dark spots, lines or anything when the monitor does come on and the crackling does go away after about 15 seconds..

Any thoughts?

I've not experienced this, but the first things I would suggest are:

    1. check all the cables are firmly in place, including the DP cable which should click into place on both the monitor and the GPU
    2. try disabling the audio through your GPU/DP temporarily and see if it still does it.

Maybe obvious things to try but it's a start Smiley Happy

DP shouldn't transmit Audio should it?

Either way i turned off audio in the GPU settings and there is no speaker wire going to the monitor.  It is just an odd sound.  On one hand it sounds like a staticky speaker but on the other hand it sounds like the sound when you would turn on an old CRT monitor and there was static on the screen.

I should note that during this time the picture doesn't distort, no black blob or anything. Picture is fine.  So very weird.

Is there  a way to turn of the speakers from the OCD menu?

It can do.  The DisplayPort spec is an audio/video interconnect spec.  It can carry both audio and video over a single connection, just like HDMI.  I think you can put the OSD speaker volume to 0 but a better option would be disabling the HD Audio driver from your GPU.

You can try following this post for details on how to disable the HD audio through device manager (you can re-enable it any time, just don't uninstall the drivers Smiley Happy)

Personally, since I use a dedicated sound card inside my machine, I don't even install the HD audio drivers with my NVIDIA driver packages so it never tries to use this anyway.

Another thing to test on this is to try a different DP cable.  My X34 came with a spare so perhaps yours did too, or you have another DP cable around to test?  It's always possible that there could be a slight flaw in the cable you're using which causes these issues.

Turned off audio from the video driver.  Tried different DP.  Still getting the crackling sound.  It is always after it has been off a while, like it is heating up.  Still unsure if it is coming from the speakers or the monitor itself.   It seems to be coming from the back center so i'm assuming that is not the speakers?

Definitely doesn't seem right.  Might be a fault in some of the electrical components, although not sure why it would only happen when first turning the thing on.  As you say, perhaps it's something warming up but it still shouldn't crackle or make other weird sounds.

Might be worth following up with Acer support via your warranty for this one and see what they think.

So Cory any ideas on this noise as to what it may be?  I would like to know the following:

Where exactly are the speakers on this monitor, kinda hard to tell.

Are the speakers technically active if they aren't connected and the audio driver isn't installed via the GPU drivers?

Have you had any issues with static electricity when starting the monitor? I live in Canada and there is electric heat so there is static electricity in the air.   My concern is that this will manifest into something bigger later. Smiley Sad

    So what are your thoughts?

I think you're right in that this is a static problem.  You notice it when turning on the monitor first thing in the morning when it has had all night for tiny amounts of static to build up in any unshielded parts of the monitor, but not at other times when the static doesn't have enough time to build up.

I very much doubt it's the speakers.  They are located along the bottom front of the monitor, either side of the Predator logo.  There shouldn't be any speaker sounds coming from the back.

Whether the static issue will progress into something more is hard to tell.  If the shielding is doing its job then you won't have any problem at all because it should dissipate any static without damage to the monitor components.

You could perhaps invest in some anti-static solutions to try to minimise the static around your monitor and see if that helps.  Try anti-static spray on a light cloth to clean the back (shiny) part of the monitor.  Also refrain from rubbing your hands over the shiny back part of the monitor as this is likely to produce more static in the first place.

    Maybe something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Keyboard-Cleaner-Anti-static-Non-hazardous/dp/B004VV4JTC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446218476&sr=8-1&keywords=computer+antistatic
