Fan keeps running even in sleep mode C720. How do I resolve?

I tried resetting it to no avail. I also blew compressed air through it. The air coming out of the chromebook doesn't feel warm and the bottom isn't either. The only way to shut off the fan is to shut down the computer. How can I fix this chromebook?

    bluefitness,

This is a pretty strange one. There are only a couple things that I can really suggest honestly:

    • Make sure the Chromebook is in stable mode, not developer or beta.
    • Submit a bug report to Google and see what they come up with.

The C720 we have here does not have the fan running when I close the lid or let it sit until it shuts off while on battery.

I have an Acer 720P doing *exactly* this.  Did anyone have any luck with settings/hardware fixes?  It's less than a year old and pretty disappointing that this would happen so soon.

By the way, this started in the past 3-4 weeks and it is running chrome stable.  it's odd that the fan runs even when the device is in "sleep" mode.

Posting to this forum (and other forums) as a potential solution for others.

After years of this problem coming and going, I finally got fed up. My fan would run at full-speed, even when the computer was stone cold. Even when it was in sleep mode! The problem sometimes disappeared for months at a time, but always returned.

I haven't replaced thermal paste on a CPU for years, but finally decided to do it for my c720p. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING, OR CAN'T AFFORD TO ACCIDENTALLY KILL THEIR CHROMEBOOK. If you know what you're doing, then opening the case, removing the fan (instructions found on ifixit.com), cleaning off existing thermal paste and replacing it solved the problem for me. My c720p works quietly again.

Again - Do not do this if you aren't comfortable with digging around in the brains of your computer. Small shops may give you a good price to do it for you, and someone who installs CPUs and heatsinks all day may be more comfortable doing this than you are.

But, if like me you got sick and tired of this shoddy paste job (factory paste job photo below), go for it!*
