Can anyone advice whether I can remove data from a laptop that powers up but with black screen without having to physically remove hard drive?

I have been offered refund from store for laptop but need to remove data first?

have you tried to connect an external monitor or TV?

You can try to time it so you can get in BIOS or you can try to time it so you can use ALT-F10 at boot.

I'm not sure of the key to press to gain access to your BIOS.   Maybe F2? If you can gain access to BIOS, you might be able to boot a Windows 10 media and use recovery tools (select Repair your Computer) or command prompt for diskpart clean all.  Or you might be able to boot to Windows 10 media without gaining access to bios.  This might load the basic graphics driver.

Also there is some method of manually forcing shut down of computer 3 times before it gets past acer screen, but I can't remember the method and you would have to time it there too. (I think).

Maybe someone else will know or can give you better details.

On my old laptop with black screen, the only way for me to get the secondary monitor to work is to toggle the appropriate Function Key (FN).  I have to time it just right in order for the video signal to engage the other monitor.  There's is brief window of opportunity to do that at startup. (I use a VGA connection secondary monitor because I doubt if any other connection would work.)

Since your laptop is newer, my archaic laptop black screen method most likely isn't necessary and/or won't work.

And it could be that you've got more serious laptop problems.

Other than removing the HDD, and putting it in a SATA to USB enclosure/caddy to wipe it on a different computer, I can't think of anything else.

Thanks all I ended up removing HDD and using caddy to extract data.
