Acer W3 Windows 10 Failures!

Hello!

Okay, I have a Acer W3-810 which I am trying to upgrade to Windows 10. Here are the facts:

  • System has over 8gb free in the C drive.
  • Downloaded Creation Tool on my main laptop and created a USB (32gb) with installation media using the wizard.
  • All recent Windows updates installed on tablet.
  • Used the USB to upgrade to Windows 10 - with updates installed.
  • First major failure the installtion reached 71% (installing features and drivers is at 91%) and failed.
  • I restarted tablet and Windows 8.1 restored itself
  • This was the error: 0x80070004 – 0x3000d. The installation failed in the First_Boot phase with an error during Migrate_Data operation
  • Searching the internet did not provide too much help on the exact cause of the error but I did  delete C:\$windows.~BT and ran a check disk thingy (CHECK EDIT BELOW FOR WHAT I DID HERE) to scan for any driver issues & restarted.
  • Once restarted began the installation process with USB.
  • Somewhere after about 20% (copying settings), the tablet restarted itself and restored Windows 8.1 throwing up this error: 0x80070070 - 0x2000C The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation
  • Again, researched issue, ran some more check disk operations, deleted Avast!
  • Restarted and began installation again!
  • Then the installation fails again somewhere between 10/25%, tablet reboots and restores Windows 8.1
  • So then I go into the BIOS and turn of the UEFI Secure Boot (as many have recommended that this works)
  • Restart installation, fails again somewhere after 20%

Now, a lot of people have suggested that ALL USB devices be removed whilst upgrading to get about the seond error, however since I am using the USB to install Windows 10, I'm not sure how to work around this. Unless the 8.4gb I have free is going to be enough?

Secondly, if by some miracle I fix the SAFE_OS failure, what's with the MIGRATE_DATA failure? And why did I manage to get ALL the way to 77% the first time I managed to get the installer to work on my tablet and now it will barely get to or past 20%

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, and I'll be happy to try and provide more information where possible.

Thank you! Smiley Happy

EDIT: The check disk thingy I did after the 71% failure I found here (rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN)

Uninstall all drivers and perform an upgrade to Windows 10 using this tool:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-download/windows10

When the installation being started, under "Choose what to keep" select the option "Nothing (everything will be deleted, including apps, files and settings)"

I had a 32GB microSD card in mine and when the install said it needed 9GB more space I told it to use the SD card.

I also told it to keep all personal data and apps.

    No flash drives.

    It worked for me.

Trying to convice the W510 to do the same thing now.

Anyone know what is the difference between Intel GMA driver 1176 and 1177 ?

I actually tried, last night, out of a lot of frustration attempting the Media Creation Tool again on the tablet and installing directly from the tool (no USB/SD). I did have enough space (turns out I had about 10gb free), and although the huge download slowed down my W3 rather significantly, it did download and begin to install...

Got the SAFE_OS failure again with the SD card and USB stick unplugged.

Since pretty much every thread I have read on this issue on Reddit, the Microsoft help/community, other various blogs and sites have all stated that this error is due to USB devices, and yet when I unplug EVERYTHING it still throws up the error, I am lost!

(Also, I can't help with the driver question, sorry).

Have you tried opening device manager and seeing if any drivers (particularly USB) are showing errors ?

Yeah I've been poking about in Device Manager and checking all the drivers are okay this evening... Nothing is showing any errors.

How may I ask did you manage to install Win 10 via the 'Get Windows 10' thingy? Did you install/change any drivers on your W3?

Did not remove anything but did keep checking for Updates and installing including the Windows "optional" ones until checking did not find anything new.

W3 just started updating, W510 I had to use the tool. Both started by saying the Intel GMA was not compatible.

    UPDATE:

For reasons yet unknown I decided to try installing Windows 10 via USB with the Media Creation Tool. I deleted ALL the temporary files I could find in my C Drive, including those in the Windows folder and user folders. Cleared out the Software Distrubtion folder and all the temporary Windows 10 Update folders too. I checked a number of times for any new Windows Updates but there were none, and checked through in Device Manager to check all my drivers were working. I then started the setup.exe on my USB, and:

    • Sent info to Microsoft to help with the upgrade (default)
    • Chose not to download the updates.
    • Chose not keep my files/settings/apps (I'd pretty much cleaned my W3 out entirely anyway).

Windows 10 is now fully installed and working on my Acer W3-810. The update process was fairly quick, probably about an hour. The longest stage was the first whilst stages two and three took barely fifteen/twenty minutes. There were no errors and everything seems to be working pretty much okay.

I will note though that my W3 does seem to be getting EXTREMELY hot, and in Device Manager there's little triangles next to the Intel Thermo regulators (sorry, I forget what they are called)... So I will look into trying to find a fix for those.

I'll give it a couple of days and post an update with any other issues I have.

Thanks to Padgett who was trying to help come up with solutions for my mystery errors. Smiley Happy If anyone else has experienced similar problems with their device please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

You need to install the DPTF drivers.

Where do I find these drivers? Smiley Happy

Something I've been trying to find myself. See

It seems to be resident in the BIOS (see here ) and related to the APCI.

Since one of the services is running (see the attachments ) and the others just stop when started it is possible that the other services are "on demand" and start when needed. I just do not know. Yet.

They're in the 8.1 driver package.

Here's the driver package installer minus everything but DPTF...

    https://www.sendspace.com/file/gtlpwv

If the installer fails for some reason you might have to install the driver manually through device manager.

BTW the latest DPTF driver I found are v7.1.0.20  dated 2014-10-9; are listed for Windows 7, 8, & 10; and both 32 and 64 bits.

This is the version I have.

DPTF drivers are customized for specific hardware. The version number is irrelevant if it was made for another device. DPTF drivers not made for the device will usually install fine, but they won't be optimized for the hardware.

Plastixx and Padgett - On a whim I just downloaded and installed the Drivers from the Acer for the W3-810. Used the wizard, installed everything, restarted and now the little yellow triangles have gone from Device Manager and none of the Intel Thermal Framework drivers/devices are showing any errors!

I'll play around with my tablet and get it working a bit to see if will get hot or BSOD on me (which it's done a handful or times since I installed Windows 10 last night) and see what happens. Smiley Happy

Thank you for all of your help again!

    a) Which driver set did you download please ?

    b) What is the version number of the DPTF drivers now (should all be the same)

    c) Did your BIOS firmware update also ?

    Thank you.

I downloaded and installed the driver from Acer > Drivers and Manuals > Selecting my device (W3-810) and selecting Windows 8.1 32 bit -

That is interesting. On my W3 I installed the same 2.01 driver package and now everything is working. It did roll back the Intel DPTF from 7.1.0.20 (Win 10 approved) to 6.2.9200.30457 but eliminated the failure to start & four sevices are running, the other is automagic.

    This comes up:

    Version:6.2.9200.30457
    Release Date:2-8-2013
    Provider:Intel
    HardwareIDs:ACPIVEN_INT&DEV_3400 ACPIINT3400*INT3400
    Supported OS:Windows 8,Windows XP

    I had:

    Version:7.1.0.20
    Release Date:10-9-2014
    Provider:Intel
    HardwareIDs:ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_3400 ACPI\INT3400*INT3400
    Supported OS:Windows 8

    which did not all load.

    is also

    Version:7.1.0.2212
Release Date:3-20-2015 (seems to be the latest)
    Provider:Intel
    HardwareIDs:ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_3400 ACPI\INT3400*INT3400
    Supported OS: Windows 8

Wonder if the same will work for the W510.
