Two problems: I lost my software disks and I have to reinstall; also, the display is sideways

I have an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 8. It's all mangled with malware. I tried to fix it but can't. I need to reinatall the software but I lost the disks with the original software. What do I need to do to get new disks or otherwise reinstall? I have tried everything else.

Also, the display orientation is sideways. The directions on Nvidia control panel is not clear. It says to navgiate to the display page in the navigation tree, but that page gives the same directions, sending me in cirlces with no fix. There is no way to actually carry out the function that I can find.

have you tried ALT+F10 at boot?

normally this will start Acer erecovery process.

    or

    Acer recovery media
if you are in the US you can buy it:

Thank you. I don't think I want to recover. The install is toast. I worked with a volunteer at Bleepingcomputer for several weeks trying to clean whatever is wrong with it. It can't be fixed. I don't have the disks to do a fresh install. I know that is what I want to do -- a fresh install. I bought the computer in Australia, if that makes a difference.

Edit: I tried recovering by holding Alt/F10 while booting. The recovery wouldn't start. Need disks.

I am an American but I live in china and I don't speak chinese.

Edit:  Getting the disks from a retailer is going to be very difficult. I found this on Microsoft's website. Will it work?

Yes it will work. It will give you a clean install of windows 8.1, but you won't get the pre-installed Acer software.

    Skip step 14.

Kudos. Can you tell me if any of the pre-istalled Acer Software is crucial? I am thinking mission-critical stuff like audio drivers and such. I remember it came bundled with a lot of extraneous programs that I didn't want on my computer anyway...

All of the drivers including audio drivers you can get from Acers website.....or windows update, or directly from the component manufacturer (whichever has the latest drivers).  You should install the chipset driver first.

As far as critical.....my acer computer(s) came preinstalled with cyberlink power DVD....which is pretty nice.  But you can probably find free software/codecs to play DVDs.  Supposedly Microsoft is going to comeout with free codecs for DVDs with Windows 10, but I don't know their timeline.

Edit: I think the vast majority of people that do clean installs of Windows 8.1 (without OEM software) use VLC media player.

Are you shaming me for doing a fresh install?

Huh?  I don't care if you do a clean install.  I will probably do a clean install of windows 10 later this fall.  But first I want to test how it works after I install it on top of this Acer OEM 8.1 installation through windows update.

I have run the Acer computer that I'm presently typing on for a couple months on a fresh/clean 8.1 install using the same method that you're about to use.

Before I did the clean install, I used Acer's builtin recovery software to make a USB recovery drive and put all their apps/software on a backup DVD.  I was able to load that cyberlink power dvd software from the backup dvd.  That's the only acer software that I loaded from the backup dvd.  Since you don't have a backup of acer software, I was suggesting that you use VLC media player.

But since today I read about the "Hacking Team" leaked email and their plan to exploit VLC media player......I withdraw my VLC suggestion.  Smiley Happy
