VN7-591G high discharge rate

Hello!

With AIDA64 I can see that battery discharge rate is about 20-22 W when laptop is almost idle. Why?

Can I make it lower?

With 51 Wh battery it's about two hours before turn off.

I have also noticed that after updating BIOS to ver. 1.13 CPU multiplier is always shown around 34 in CPU-Z and never drops to 8.

    pspost,

What power management setting in the control panel are you using currently, something other than power/battery saver?

    Thanks for reply!

It's default Win7 x64 balanced or power saver mode, it doesn't matter, both shows over 20W discharge.

    I also had installed

"Patch Acer Updates the Windows Power Plan settings to improve wireles [...] 20150204 70.7 KB 2015/03/16"

    and

"BIOS Acer Release Note: Improve System Performance 1.13 4.9 MB 2015/03/25"

    from drivers page.

Can you say what is usual discharge rate for VN7-591G after reboot in idle?

    pspost,

I do not have any documentation about discharge rates for the battery unfortunately. I am surprised that the balanced and power saving modes have the same discharge rates, power saving should have more things "off/disabled" than balanced ideally by default.

    I tried it again.

    Reset power plan settings, reboot.

    Didn't help at all.

Maybe I can perform some tests or checks so you can say whether it possible to run on battery longer?

they had 21.4W in "Idle Maximum" and 6.2W in "Idle Minimum".... 4 hous for WIFI surfing and 3:41 hours for video playback...

Maybe it's BIOS update? Can I have more info about last (1.13) BIOS update?

    pspost,

Version 1.13 just updated the BIOS with some additional NVidia support, nothing else.

In description of BIOS update 1.13 it's said: "Improve System Performance", so it may be not only "some additional NVidia support"?

Also CPU-Z doesn't show 8x core frequency multiplier any more (I didn't notice from which point in time but I suppose after BIOS update).

AIDA and HWiNFO64 shows all four cores run at ~3400 MHz in idle. Maybe that's the reason of high idle discharge?

    What do you think?

    pspost,

It is strange that the CPU would be operating at near max turbo'd speed (3.5 GHz) at idle when the normal speed is 2.5 GHz, overclock is 3.45 GHz.

I'd like to see the system set to the default power saver settings in the Windows power options itself, no offense to the 3rd party software installed, and see if that makes a difference. I can't express how much we need this system to be running at default manufacturer hardware settings and no 3rd party software forcing changes to make sure everything is working correctly before I can bring this up to our engineers.

If the CPU is set at max overclocking or to operate at max turbo from a software or hardware setting that will affect things.

I look forward to your update. Smiley Happy

    Hello!

    Thanks for your reply.

    >>I'd like to see the system set to the default power saver settings in the Windows power options itself,

How can I show it to you? I had clicked "Restore default settings for this plan" (for power saver and balanced).

    >> no 3rd party software forcing changes

I used ThrottleStop, but I'm not sure this is the reason. I also had tried it to slow down cores to 25x, and it works until next system reboot. After reboot it is again 34x.

    >>we need this system to be running at default manufacturer hardware settings

Can I reset to default manufacturer hardware settings?

    pspost,

If you wish to reset to factory defaults there are a couple ways to do so.

Using Acer Recovery Management to Restore Windows 8

Restore Windows 8 with a USB Recovery Drive

Once it's reset, go to the power options in the control panel and set the power option to maximum battery life and see if that extends the life. You'll have to install your discharge application, obviously, but don't have it force any changes that might overwrite the Windows applications themselves, if possible. Smiley Happy

Thanks for going the length on this one with me, hoping we can get it figured out for you.

Thanks for your suggestion to restore Windows8, I had made recovery Win8 USB drive before moving to Win7.

But that's impossible for me right now because I have my work on this laptop and can't spend time for reinstalling all apps.

Maybe in two weeks I'll upgrade laptop with SSD and new Windows and will try your solution.
