Why is my screen going brighter and darker continuously?

My computer has this habit of going from bright to dim.  The brightness setting doesn't change, but the screen just seems to fade in and out as if the brightness is changing.  What I have noticed is that if I switch between windows this is very noticeable, or on certain pages it will go to bright, then everywhere else it will be dim again.  I don't know why it does it.  Often it will gradually go from brighter to dimmer, but sometimes it jumps.

According to the specs, it does not have an ambient sensor.  I can't even find one anyway.  There are also no settings available anywhere for me to stop this feature from happening, or to control an "ambient sensor" if one existed.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?  I just want my screen to stay at the same brightness regardless of what is displayed on screen.  I'm not moving the computer, moving myself does nothing, and I don't need the screen to be brighter on pages with lots of white and darker on pages with a lot of dark colors.  If anything, the reverse would be better.

Thanks,

If it is of interest to someone, I have an Acer Aspire V3-551-8887

My Acer Aspire 5253 does this too; not continuously.  I think it's related to my failing battery which I plan to replace.  I also checked the 'power savings' settings so it isn't supposed to darken when I'm running off the AC power (still does it though).

if you hit FN + the right or left arrow on the KB, and not the number pad if it has one, the screen brightness should go up and down.

I know how to change the brightness level manually, and through the power settings.  That's not an issue.  The thing is, while it's doing it (and it only does it sometimes--I don't know why it does it some days and not others), it doesn't stop, but will change depending on the screen I'm currently at.  I could look at the brightness and tell it to "decrease" and it doesn't change anything.  Then it will dim on its own, and decrease still doesn't do anything.  I haven't noticed if I can see it when I increase the brightness level.  All I know is that increasing the brightness level even one level is much brighter than the screen actually gets when it's going from "dim to bright" as I have mentioned.

It just seems like a glitch--I just don't know why its happening.  Maybe it's an old videocard driver?
