Unable to boot

I have an Aspire V7-482PG-5842.

Today one of my children, frustrated at a video game, punched the computer. Banged his fist smack in the middle of the keyboard, he admitted.

He must have hit it pretty hard, since now it won't boot. I get the infamous blue dialog, "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed".

I tried entering the BIOS settings and switching to Legacy BIOS. That did not work. Nor did resetting to defaults.

Foolishly, I had not created a recovery media, and even my last backup was months ago. I can probably create one from another computer, but will that erase the hard drive? Is there any way to salvage the data on the hard drive?

I tried booting from a CD (System Rescue) but it didn't take.

First of all i would check if your HDD is still listed on BIOS under the main tab, SATA devices.

if it's not listed.....it can be completly dead or somehow disconnected (i doubt).

if your HDD is still listed:

    Download Hiren's boot cd
    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

you must create a bootable media as CD or USB flash drive (you can use a software like Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive) from the .iso inside the downloaded .zip file.

set BIOS to Legacy and choose CD or USB flash drive
    boot selecting Mini XP

connect and external USB HDD or USB flash drive and copy your files, if your old HDD is still working.

So I don't think the HD is working. If I boot with legacy BIOS, it doesn't show up at all. If I boot with UEFI, it sometimes shows up.

I removed the bottom cover of the laptop and had a look. No obvious sign of damage, no cracks or anything, and as far as I could tell the drive was correctly attached.

I booted with HirenCD. On legacy BIOS, it booted and I could launch Mini XP, but Disk Management could see no hard drive. On UEFI BIOS, it got stuck at "Preparing Automatic Repair".

I tried SuperRescue CD, but it wouldn't boot at all.

I created a USB recovery drive from another computer, but it couldn't see the drive either. Most of the time even it won't boot, just a spinning dotted-line circle appears.

Now I'm wondering if anything is salvageable. Even buying a new hard drive won't work, will it? There's no recovery partition to restore it from. And if the damage is actually to the motherboard's SATA connection, I suppose no hard drive will work? Though if that's the case, perhaps the hard drive could be recovered if connected to another computer?

    at this point can be:

    1) dead HDD

    2) something broken on motherboard SATA connection

you can try the HDD connecting to another laptop or desktop with an external HDD box or on desktop using standard SATA and power supply connections and check if it works.

if the HDD works on another machine.....something is broken on the laptop motherboard

if the HDD is dead, it's worth a try to test with another HDD

    about recovery partition:

if you are in the US you can buy it:
