    Flgaz,

    The easiest method to get to the advanced options is the method outlined in this article.

    Well, unfortunatly the link you sent was to document ID 34866 that I referenced to in my original post. So I've been there and done that.

    Going through the steps to restore through Acer Recovery Managment V9.014 ending up on a screen with 3 choices.

    Select Restore Type

    1) Restore OS to factory Defaults

    2) Completely Restore to Factory Defaults

    3)Exit

    Attempted 1) several times Got back to Select Restore Type screen

    Then attempted 2) To proceed was instructed to remove all files from disk. Booted up Linux from USB and used GNU Parted To unformat the Drive. Ran Restore again and still ended up at the Select Restore Type Screen. But now no longer gets the "ACER" boot up screen but the Motherboard's vendor boot screen instead.

    I would like to get Windows 8.1 back up on this machine. What I messed up on originally is I used a restore disk for another Windows 8.1 machine I own. including calling the automatic Microsoft number. So that might be involved with my issue. Booting up I have Secure boot on and fast boot off. Everything I have tried has brought me back to the Select Restore Type screen.  I am assuming that my Windows activation key is imbedded somewhere in BIOS and hidden. What is my next step?

    Flgaz,

    When you say unformat the drive, the drive was completely raw with no formatting or partitions of any kind I assume? If the drive is raw the recovery media will create all the partitions needed when it runs through. If there is any formatting or partitions that can cause the recovery media to not work properly.

    Well I've attempted to reinstall Windows 8.1 about 10 times and always end up at 'install Windows' screen 'Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error . To install Windows clik ok to restart...”

    The procedure I am going through is as follows;

    First I am booting a live Linux by usb and using Gparted to remove the partitions. There are six partitions sda1-6. Then in preferences\Disk There are 4 options to format. I've tried all 4 options. Erase; Don't overwrite existing data (quick)/ overwrite existing data with zeros (slow)

    Partitioning; Compatible with modern systems and hard disks >2TB (GPT)(disk is 1TB) or no partitioning (Empty)

    put in System Disk 1/1 and power down. Turn on and when the spinning disk starts turn off the system repeat till Windows says it will start the system. Acer Recovery loads and gives me the options of just reinstall the OS or Complete reinstall. I choose complete and it asks for the 3 Recovery disks. They load during “Restore progress” then asks for the System disk and goes to “Updating System” Disk spins till it it gets to 4% then Acer Recovery asks for the language disk. That loads to 17% then jumps to 100% complete. Reboot and get the 'Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error . To install Windows click OK to restart...”

    Then try reinstalling just the OS option (it follows the 4% and 17% pattern) a couple of times hoping that Windows would have put some kind of log on the drive to debug the problem but that has not happened.

    Then can boot with the system disk and remove it and get an Windows screen that says;

    Recovery your pc needs to be repaired Error Code 0xc000000f

    Windows\system32\winload.efi (that is probably because it expects something in the optical drive).

    It is trivial to install Linux Mint to the harddrive and a backup I have for a Lenovo laptop Win 8.1 loads fine but since it is different hardware it will only be a limited session. I have a Toshiba portable hard-drive using NTI backup EZ. Unfortunately booting the Acer from that the restore points all load the Lenovo backups. I see the Acer backups but I can not access them. I believe I have somehow messed up my Windows product key on the Acer. How can I recover it?

    Are you able to create a bootable media from an iso?

    i suggest you to run memtest and check if your ram has any error.

    or if you are out of warranty, open the case and try to reinstall the OS with just one ram stick.

    Yes I can create a botable USB from an ISO on the Acer.

    MemTest checks out fine

    I can install Windows 8.1 from a removable Harddrive but not the one that came with my Acer.

    I need to be able to install the Win8.1 from the Acer Recovery but can't.

    When you get in to the UEFI/BIOS, try to load the defaults.

    Now the following links and advice won't help you now, but it might help someone reading this.  Next time, before you try to install Linux or even windows 10 technical preview, make sure you create a USB backup.  It probably wouldn't hurt to also create a system image.  I installed Windows 10 technical preview (dual boot) on one of my computers and it worked fine but the boot loader was a little flaky a couple of times (which made me a little nervous of course).  I tried doing a restore to defaults with Acer recovery management, but I couldn't get it to work for whatever unknown reason.  So I dug out the 32 GB USB thumb drive and was able to get it back to factory condition.  Be sure to use 32 GB drive and not 16 GB drive.
