Switch 10 - Please wait while we install a system update

Hi,

I recently brought a switch 10. Every time I turn the device on, I see the Acer Logo and it says "please wait while we install a system update".

I must have booted the device about 40 times now but it does this every time.

Windows updates are up to date and so are all the Acer updates.

Any ideas on how to stop this happening ?

Thanks,

    Try this:

    1. Right click the Start button, or press Windows key + x
    2. Select the option Command prompt (admin).
    3. Once you open Command prompt, enter the following command and press enter:
      1. takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
      2. Ren c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old
      3. close command prompt and reboot

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatley did not have a pending.xml in that location.

Did have a migration.xml which i eventually managed to get permissions over !!! Deleted this but made no difference. Still get the message on boot.

Thanks again - but no joy:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Nope - still the same. Would a windows update cause the Acer boot screen to show this message, I would have thought it more likely to be an Acer update that is causing this ?

When I check for Acer updates via Acer Care Center - it tells me that I dont have any Critical Updates or any listed under update history. It says my system is upto date, but would I expect to see any updates ?

    Thanks,

    Matt.

I honestly haven't seen this until Ironfly brought it to my attention. It looks like it's clearly an issue with the Windows update. Here are a couple things I found that might be helpful until I can learn alittle more.

    http://www.optimizewindows8.net/2014/01/fixing-please-wait-screen-problem-in-windows-8-8-1/

The second links has a couple people confirming unplugging and letting the system drain power before charging it back up and restarting the system.

Let us know if either of these are effective.

Thanks for the links..ran through most of these, but still no solution.

I am left with letting the machine run out of battery to see if that resolves it.

Otherwise I will  have to do the refresh or reset on the device - which is a real pain !

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Matt,

I have exactly the same problem (the screenshot confirms it).  Did you manage to find a solution for this problem in the end?

I notice that the problem happens even before Windows can be started in safe mode.  I wonder whether it might be associated with an update of the BIOS - possibly with an error?  I recently received my Acer Switch 10 back from service (under guarantee) with a new motherboard and the updated BIOS.  I can't say 100% for sure but I have the strong impression that this issue is with me from the very beginning (i.e. when I got the computer back).

    Thanks

    Hi Tim,

I had this error from receiving my device. I have updated the BIOS since I have the device but I am still getting it - so I dont think ts related to a BIOS update.

I tried letting my device run out of battery - It ran down to the point of whern trying to power it up, it says critical battery (or something like that) -  not sure if this i good enough, but I still get the problem. I cant see how to get it completly flat.

My boot time doesnt seem overfly long though - it just annoys me everytime i start the device.

    Matt.

Thanks Matt, I have the same experience, i.e. the boot time is still similar to say a lower performance Win7 PC and I can live with it, it just shouldn't be there.

I'm still suspicious about the BIOS update as a possible cause - has anyone else had the same issue?

Same issue here. Tried updating every possible driver. Problem is probably related to Acer firmware because it's appears before the windows logo.

This issue makes SSD boot time like on HDD. With lack of hibernation mode/battery hungry sleep mode the only way to save battery when S10 is innactive is full system shutdown but this issue makes every boot lasts longer then it should.

    Hi Tim,

I can just confirm the issue - my case was exactly the same: my Switch went to service under guarantee, then after getting it back with new motherboard and most recent BIOS version (1.14) since first boot I'm getting the same picture. Upgrading to Win 10 didn't change anything.

It's horrible, makes this device useless unless left in standby mode - such a long waiting time until boot is complete is unacceptable. I only hope that this is a BIOS issue, that vould be resolved simply by an update (if any is coming).

    Cheers

Thanks for this confirmation Hubert.  So far I have seen so sign that Acer is on the case on this one.  But let's hope a new firmware update does arrive to solve this problem.  Maybe if you/we bombard their customer service they might at least register the problem...?

The only good news is that our cases are not the specific ones - it happens on several devices (I can see, Matt's Switch is affected as well).

I wonder whether sending back to the service would resolve the issue. Or should make an official report about this? Isn't this community forum enough to notice, that something's going on...?
