deleted the old partitions just leaving the factory restore partition alone. rebooted straight into the factory restore and this morning eyes blearily awake was delighted that it had proceeded normally. turned it on it's quick and peppy and looked at the desktop. i had done it. w/o pulling the cmos battery.

The easiest thing is to restart the process.

I am having the same problem. I don't know how to do what you did to fix yours, as I am not very good with computers but can follow step by step instructions, if you wouldn't mind posting those. I am so upset that I bought the set of disks and now can't even use them & my netbook is useless.  Thank you for any help.

first of thanks for the reply and sorry to hear you are having the same problem.

if you can get your hands on partition magic (bootable cd) that would get you

to the partitions on the hard drive. i use gparted on puppy linux.. but any linux

distro w/ gparted will get you to the partition table.

what you want to do is two things.

    1) delete the 100meg boot partition, and the next one over from that which

will probably be the biggest partion on the hard drive = c:\

2)flag the restore partition to be bootable.  in gparted all you have to do

is right click on the restore partion from the flying menu choose "manage flags"

and the first check box will be "boot(able"

apply your settings, then reboot. the factory restore partition should fire up

    without having to press alt-f10.

HOWEVER, this assumes that you do indeed have a factory restore partition

and that someone didn't redo your hard drive with straight win7, erasing

the hard drive entirely. i do hope this isn't the case with you. if so, you

can get replacement dvd's for $15.

    good luck

I have this same problem. I am trying to restore factory settings and it hangs up while installing office 2010. I have restarted the process and it happened again. Anything else I can try? I would appreciate the help.

i had the same problem..you need to get another windows cd/dvd any version or any free software to get to your hard drive

partitions..delete the 100mb partition and restart the process

I tried this used Gparted and reformated the two partitions suggested and reinstalled it did not work for me. However there are two other options for people with this problem.

1 get a copy of your machines windows version (mine was windows 7 home premium) and install, your product key is on the bottom of your laptop and when prompted enter it.

2 If you are stuck and need to make this work do this, on the install screen where you are stuck at installing office 2010 (mine said 31 of 45). Push the WINDOWS button at the bootom you will see the task bar flash. You will see on the left next to the start buton two icons one is for the system prperation tool 3.14 in looks kind of like the old network icon two or three little boxes and one for Acer Gaia ALaunchX.

Now this flashes only very briefly so you have to be quick. Put your mouse over where the Acer Gaia Prep icon is press the windows key when you see it flash right click move the mouse up above close and hit pin it to the task bar. Thenpress the windows key again and move your mouse up and hit the close button. This is very tricky as you only have a brief moment to do all this press windows button see icon flash have mouse already over wher icon is and right click then quickly move mouse up and hit target (first you want to pin this to task bar(second up) then repeat and hit close(first option up)). This will stop the stuck install screen then you want click ok on the system preparation 3.14 tool it will run then reboot. repeat above mentioned process only this time Acer Gaia is already pinned so you only need to hit close to stop the stuck installing screen. Now right click on icon pinned to task bar for Acer Gaia hit properties to see the file path of Acer Gaia Alaunchx (in the acer OEM file on CSmiley Happy and remove folder delete or move some where else this will stop it from relaunching every time you reboot. I tried un ticking

start up option thru comand configsys even though it was unticked it still fired on reboot so I moved folder to recycle bin and it rebooted fine. Good Luck you will need fast fingers good timeing and patience to do this. After i did this i reinstalled with an upgrade disk because I did not want the bloat ware from Gateway and did know if anything important was in 32 thru 45 of ended install program. If you came preloaded with office 2010 you would have needed to use the product id that came with paperwork from origional purchase so just download and install office 2010 insert product id good to go.

I too have the restore load problem, hanging up on Office2010. I tried the restore from hard drive about 8 times and it hangs every time at the office install 22/38. So I bought the restore software from Acer. It also hangs up on the Office install. I happens to be operation 34/51

My question? This has been going on for years now. Viewing various sites on the internet, it has going on with Windows XP installs. Why has Acer, Emachine, Gateway (Whoever they are) done nothing about it? Why are we all spending hours trying to work around their problem?

The Office 2010 is just a trial version anyway. Why not, at least, send out the disc that "they are selling" without the Office problem causer on it. Why did I just spend $21.00 for a hunk of *****?

    Sorry, venting!

Yes!! Thank you! I've been trying for 2 weeks to install the Acer recovery disk's and it kept hanging at 43 of 44 ( cleanup) and you're answer helped me fix it! Thank you so much! All I had to do was run the hiren's disk and all I had to do was catch the red dot or sorry that's the cats, no I had to pin the 3.14 program and did what you said and found the file that was causing the problem ( it was a file of bloatware called peload I just found it and deleted it and it run through!) thank you again ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was a Gateway support tech almost 20 years ago.  I see that some things never change.  Acer techs posted complicated or expense "fixes" without even really investigating the issue. Replace the hard drive? Really?

I  tried the "quick fingers" / Windows key / Close the AlaunchX window method and actually did it.  But here's an easier way:

Press the Windows key and the Home key (Windows key has the little Windows flag on it, Home is up above the Backspace key on my Acer 5742 laptop.

This will drop the splash screen with the - hung up at 25/32 installing Office 2010 or whatever yours probably says - splash screen.

(This idea of deleting the 100 meg partition I've read about is ok for more advanced users but I don't think it is completely necessary.)

Once you've got your Desktop showing, right click on the minimized preloader problem child and left click Properties.

This will show you the "path" to the application.

Copy the path from the line that says, "Location: "  You can drag over the C:\OEM\Preload\Command\AlaunchX (or whatever yours says), right click and copy.

Open up the Registry editor by typing regedit in the Windows Search field...and hit Enter.

Agree to the warning about running the program.

When RegEdit opens scroll all the way to the top of the list in the left pane (an old superstitious habit. I want it to start at the beginning Smiley Wink )

It's a good idea to ALWAYS back up your registry before doing anything with the registry.  Go to the Menu: File > Export and make sure that the bullet, "All" is ticked.  Save it on your Desktop or somewhere safe you'll remember.

Go to the Edit menu and click Find.

CTRL-V  (to paste the path into the search field) and hit Find Next.

Regedit search may find two or three or more entries so be patient.

When it finds the entry be sure and only delete the one line containing the "AlaunchX" path in the RIGHT hand pane (right click delete).

Press the F3 (top row of keys..Function keys) to search again.

Repeat this process until receiving the message, "finished searching through registry".

Close RegEdit and Reboot your computer.  Yay!

Next I would rush over to "Uninstall a program" and get rid of all the bloatware that comes pre installed.  I also uninstall all Adobe products and then re acquire them fresh if need be.   Same with antivirus and 'helpful' utilities.

This is especially true if you are restoring and older unit.  Much of this stuff will be outdated and prone to immediate attack by malware etc etc. .  Get it fresh ...just like your produce.

Also you should go to "Computer" in your main Start menu (the Start marble), Right click and then Properties.  Look in the left hand pane for Device Manager.

When Device Manager opens look down the list of items and make sure you don't see any yellow marks indicating a missing driver (performance would be affected even if you "don't need that item").  Acer website should have driver downloads.

      Hope this helps!
