Can I replace RAM in AOA150 netbook?

After changing from XP to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS I found the netbook a tad slow. It has the original configuration with ½ GB fixed ram plus ½ GB removeable. I tried to insert a 2 GB DDR2 1.8V but the machine would not boot. What is the max GB I can use?

  • Hello,

Could you give me the first ten characters of the laptop serial number (S/N)? Only the first ten.

    Normally it's 1Gb + 512MB on board.

Are you needing the higher RAM only in Ubuntu? Does that version recognize the RAM if you upgrade? I'm assuming that it would accept the higher RAM since Ubuntu is very up to date/ XP is not.

When you press F2 to go into Bios, how much RAM does it show there?

  • Your netbook supports up to 1.5Gb (stick of 1Gb +512Mb on board).

It don't want to boot up for this reason (stick of 2Gb).

That's what I suspected, thanks for clarifying. But one more thing: I have seen something about DDR3 vs. DDR3L and 1.35V vs. 1.5V. Is there something I should be aware of when chasing for a 1 MB ram?

The problem was increasing to 2 GB stick with 512 on the board = 2.5 GB - too much. Ubuntu would have loved having a lot of ram but the machine does not support it, so I understand. Bios shows I now have a total of 1024, which I will try to upgrade to 1536, if I can find a 1 GB stick these days... This should make Ubuntu run a bit faster.

For me, it only supports DDR2 667 or 800MHz (Crucial).

Yes you'll see on the Crucial website the maximum is 1536Mb.
