XC-603 cold boot problems

Hi,

I normally shut down my PC each night before I go to bed, but just recently when I switch on the PC in the morning it doesn’t always boot properly.

It will power on, but not POST or have any HD activity.

If I hold the power button in and do a hard reset, it then it boots up fine.

Once the PC has been warmed up it seems OK again. And will shut down and start up as normal.

I’ve tried disabling Fast Boot, and do a normal boot process, but it is the same.

Any ideas?

    Hiram,

It sounds like an issue with the power button possibly, or an intermittent issue with the mainboard. In this situation I would recommend contacting technical support in your region for further assistance.

Actually after posting that message I haven't had anymore problems on cold booting. I have a feeling it was an issue with Secure Boot, which got fixed after an update.

Hopefully the problem wont return - but so far, so good.

    Cheers

Subsequent to this - it started not booting again, halting with a back screen before the Windows login.

I suspected a secure boot issue - and sure enough, eject the optical drive and the computer boots.

I think the O/S is seeing the optical drive as insecure, as if it has a DVD in it, it hasnt.

This is surely a Windows bugs, and not hardware.

    Cheers

    what's your OS?

have you checked on BIOS (press DEL at boot), the Boot device priority?

    The OS is Windows 8.1.

It goes past POST and into the OS booting stage before I hit a problem. I'm pretty sure it isn't a hardware issue.

It is hard to replicate, and it only does when the PC is cold and has been off for a while.  Although, having just said that, that does point to hardware.

The only thing I can think of is, the DVD drive is being incorrectly identified when cold booting. It thinks there is a disc inserted that isnt signed.

    try this:

    windows key logo + x

    click on power options

click on Choose what the power buttons do

click on Change settings that are currently unavailable

on shutdown settings untick Turn on fast startup

    click on Save changes

shutdown your pc, then try to cold boot after a while.

I have tried disabling fast start, see my original post. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to help.

    yep, sorry.

have you already the latest BIOS?

in the past i had a similar issue with custom assembled PCs that will not boot with DVD tray closed, need to open; changed DVD model solved the issue but on some i tried a different BIOS and worked too.
