First of all, you need to know what version is installed on your A500.

settings/about phone/build number or build version

perfect but.....to try to update your device, you need a COM_GEN1 rom, not very easy. Smiley Happy

am still wondering how I can update my device,  and do I need to install all the updates listed in the acer support website?  or just the last one listed, and what about the O.S. download listed there,  and the other available updates listed, or if i need to only install one zip file, can you provide a link I can use to get the required update. thank you in advance, also i forgot my password to my previous user id, but am waiting for acer to resnd link.

You need to find the update file that matches your version of the tablet. It might not be on the main Acer site, only on the site dedicated to your locale. If it's not there you'll need to request it directly from Acer support. Once you have the correct image file you'll need to extract the zip, giving you typically two files. One will be a text file and the other will be named "update.zip". The update.zip file will need to be copied to the root of a SD card appropriate to your model (likely a microSD 4GB or larger with the default FAT32 filesystem).

the update listed on the acer website, that mentions the a500 update is 'kernal source code (for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) it's 96.7MB's released 2012/05/08' is that the right one i need? There is also a list of 3 O.S updates, released in 2014/09/05, 391.5MB's, 394.3MB's, and 391.5MB's large, what are those updates, I clicked the model and followed the directions that the acer website asks, and i ended with a list of update released in 2014/09/05, and a Document update released in 2014/12/17, 112.7KB's large,  list of updates reased in 2014/.... and in the Android 4.0 culumn, there is an update that says O.S update released in 2014/09/05, 434.2MB's large, and a Patch Update, that was released in 2013/03/21, what are these updates? listedin the aver website... http://www.acer.ca/ac/en/CA/content/drivers

You have a two step update ahead of you. Go to the support section of the Acer site, Drivers and Manuals. Choose your model and select Android 3.2 HoneyComb for the OS. From the O.S. tab you should see 7.014.01.041.203.01.WW.GEN1 as an upgrade for the COM.GEN1 image. Download that and install it as directed before (extract the archive, put the update.zip file in the root of your SD card, do the special boot with keys pressed, select the update file and update).

Once you have the updated 3.2, go back to the Acer site except this time select Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Download and upgrade as before and you'll have the latest. Smiley Happy

I am not having much success trying to do this update. My version is gen 2, I selected that on the site, downloded and copied to the microSD, extracted and put the microSD in the Acer, restarted into recovery and all I get is the Android robot with a yellow exclamation mark, any help?

Are you sure you were using the right version? They are different for each locale and yours has to match.

7.014.02.041.205.01.PA.CUS1 is what I downloaded from the US support side for my costco bought tablet that says the build number is Acer_A500_7.014.02_COM_GEN2

you can't flash PA.CUS1 on COM.GEN2 or viceversa, the versions must match.

I got it from here: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers and it says that is the one to be used for that version, or is it just a trick to put it on that line?

    IronFly ACE Posts: 18,413 Trailblazer

simply the version available on the Acer website, can't be flashed on your device.

    different build version

    yours COM.GEN2

    acer      PA.CUS1

version not matching = not flashable

OK, it seems like I understand what you are saying, but do you understand what I am saying? Have you seen that Acer site I refered to? On that site it say that for that build that is the correct version to download. So if you are correct, then Acer is wrong, or I'm the one that's missing something here.

Double check that you are doing the upgrade correctly. You have extracted the original zip file to get the 'update.zip' file, then copied that file to the root of a FAT32 SD card? You are correct with your versions, you have to upgrade to the PA_CUS1 build before you can then upgrade to the ICS version.
