New hard drive (3 TB) is a lot smaller (746 GB) according to Windows Vista.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen

I have an Acer Aspire M5620 with Windows Vista 32-bit and just bought a 3 TB hard drive from Western Digital (WD30EFRX) but when formatting it Windows said that it was only 746 GB so that is all I have now.

Prior to buying this HDD I was told that there are no limitations in hard drive sizes for todays computers.

Does anyone know what the problem can be?

Could it be the BIOS that sets the limitation?

This is my BIOS information:

MB Manufacturer Name: ACER

Main Board ID: G33T-AM

SMBIOS Version: 2.5.0

System BIOS Version: R01-A0

BIOS Release Date: 07/21/07

I found a BIOS upgrade R01-B2 from 12/09/2008 but after reading the warning I am not sure if I dare to upgrade...

Hoping someone can help me.

    Good day

Limitations will always be there, but the problem is the bios manufactures dont give us more information on what the limitations are. Doing a bios update might help and its worth try. I would also like to enlighten you that my AM5640 could only take up to 1TB, nothing more.

    Regards,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have now upgraded my BIOS but unfortunately it made no difference.

If your AM5640 can only handle 1 TB I suppose that I can't expect any more. I will probably just have to accept the 746 GB.

    Best regards

    Andreas
