i would suggest you to update to the latest drivers available for windows 8 before the update:

also check if your BIOS is update.

There's quite a few drivers there...would I download them all?!

    i would update:

    chipset

    VGA

by the way i can be more specific if you will report also the stop error in the blue screen, if your system rebooted automatically after the error, you can force to don't do it.

so you can take a pic of the error or report here ( it's like 0x00000)

    to disable automatic reboot:

Go to Control Panel\System and Security\System and advanced system settings and click on advanced tab and click on start up and recovery and click on settings, untick "automatically restart"

Ok I have updated the BIOS to v2.12 and have downloaded drivers. Currently the system cannot find any updates from Windows 8 and cannot update WIndows 8.1 because previous updates cannot be found. The machine will also restart with a tcpip.sys error leading to this screen when restarting.

What in the 'ell is going on?!

Tcpip.sys can be relates to the LAN drivers, try to update them.

Please note that can be a virus too, so do a full scan on your system.

In the worst case, make a backup of your personal data and do a factory reset and then update to windows 8.1
