Remote not working after Windows 8 upgrade

After I upgraded my Revo Rl70 to Windows 8 the supplied Remote Control does not work with either Windows Media Center or XBMC. Not response to any button press at all. LED on remote flashes, but that is all. I have tried installing the eHome device, but no luck. Changed the remote batteries also.

Help needed.

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64bit - Clean install (not upgrade) and same remote control

    Here is how:

    1. Download "FIR_ITE_5.1.0.8_W7x86W7x64_A" from Acer site

        (Select Windows 7 64 bit)

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/FIR/FIR_ITE_5.1.0.8_W7x86W7x64_A.zip?acerid=634614370273105234&Step1=Revo&Step2=Revo&Step3=RL70&OS=701&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6

    2.  Extract ZIP file your downloaded. Do not run setup.

          Navigate to folder  ...FIR_ITE_5.1.0.8_W7x86W7x64_A\FIR_ITE_5.1.0.8_W7x86 x64\INFDrv

    3. Double-click on reg file called "InstallRegistry.reg" to import setting.Make sure to answer all prompts Yes and OK

    4. Reboot your PC

    5. If should start working right after you login, but you might need to start "CIRAP.exe" file that is located in the same folder that REG file it.

Above steps should work if you devices are running properly:

To check open your device manager:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Device Manager

and make sure that you don't have any exclamation points on some unknown devices

You should also see two devices in the list under the "Human Interface Devices"

           ITECIR Infrared Receiver (SIO2)

           and

            Microsoft eHome Infrared Tranceiver

This worked for me just now so it should work for you too.

I'm not seeing anything indicating the remote should no longer work under Windows 8.

All of the drivers we have available for the system are posted on our Drivers site.

Do you have any hardware in Device Manager with an exclamation point or red x on it?

I presume this is the eHome device. However, there are no device errors in the Device Manager.

No drivers shown for Win 8 64 bit on Drivers site.

Any other suggestions to troubleshoot are welcomed.

I show 5 different TV tuners and a VGA driver for Windows 8 64-bit for upgrades on the US Drivers site.

You presume that what is "the eHome device" ?

I have also upgraded from Windows 7 (Home Premium) to Windows 8 Pro, and have exactly the same problem.

I have uninstalled the eHome driver, removed the usb ir, rebooted, replaced the usb ir, but the remote is still not working.

I have an Acer Revo RL70, which came bundled with wireless mouse, keyboard and remote.

Same problem here.  Appears as if this is a common problem.  Was there any resolution?

If not, in response to your questions Acer-Tommy, hopefully I can answer.

No, there are no devices that display an exclamation point or red x.

I can see the Windows 8 drivers available, none appear to be applicable to this particular problem.

presume nessiemon is referring to the "Microsoft eHome infrared transceiver" that can be found in the device manager. also presume this is the device that is the issue.

Stavross seems to have tried all the obvious things with no luck.

What else could be the issue?

Help much appreciated!  No having a remote for our main TV is extremely frustrating!

While awaiting a response, I have done some more digging.  As discussed, there are no suitable drivers for any Infrared device on the Acer drivers web page for RL70 running Windows 8.

There are however, IR drivers for the RL70 running windows 7, which I presume are already "running" and don't work.  Crucially, there are drivers for the RL80 running windows 8.

Can someone from Acer please advise as to which driver we should be using?  Thanks.

While waiting for some form of response, I decided to try myself.

Thinking the driver for the Infrared device was the problem I pressed ahead.  Currently installed are:

    FIRITEFIR Driver5.1.0.86.6 MB2012/01/06

I tried upgrading the driver to that was listed fro the RL80, but are supposedly designed(?) for Windows 8.

    FIRITEFIR Driver5.2.0000.06.7 MB2012/11/12

Unfortunately made no difference.  I still have a brand new machine with a remote control that doesn't work.

    Any assistance please?

I didn't mention the device in the Device Manager is the

    ITECIR Infrared Receiver (SIO2)

It can be found in the Human Interfaces Devices section along with the Micrososft eHome Infrared Transceiver device.

Can anyone help?  Acer-Tommy?  There must be people reading this thread, it has over 300 views!

There doesn't seem to be any problems with the same Infrared hardware running on the RL80 in Windows 8.  This can't be a difficult issue to solve.

The RL70 is supposed to be fully supported by Acer under Windows 8, so someone must know the answer.

    Come on Acer!

I have tried contacting Acer phone support who agree this product is fully supported under Windows 8.

However, they claim this is a software problem, and to contact software support, even though it is clearly a driver issue and software support deal with application issues.

The other issue is that software support comes with a £0.50 per minute charge which I refuse to pay for and have told Acer that.

The is another thread on this issue, see below, where the user seems to have solved the problem with the RL80 driver, but neglects to mention how it was achieved.

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Acer-All-In-Ones-Desktops/How-do-you-get-the-Revo-70-remote-control-to-work-under-Windows/td-p/44727

Overall I'm extremely disappointed with Acer's support offerings, no more so than this forum.

There must be someone who can enlighten me with the solution.  What about the earlier posts in this thread?

I'd appreciate if an Acer representative would step in here.

    Thanks.

You are the boss Russieb - many thanks, did not realise how much I used the remote until it was no longer working, cheers for your assistance, followed your instructions and worked perfectly.
