Switch 10: Keyboard dropping characters

If I don't type for about 30-seconds, when I start again the first character is always dropped. Seems like the keyboard is in in a Sleep mode. On screen keyboard is fine as is the USB full size one I use when at home.

I have downloaded and installed all the latest Switch drivers.

I searched here and back in August there were some complaints, seems like it has not been fixed yet or has it?

Thanks

I was seeing the same symptom with my W700 and it's keyboard and was able to mitigate it by removing the power settings on the appropriate USB device. The bluetooth keyboard ends up looking like USB to the OS.

Did you update the BIOS to the latest version?

please try to flash keyboard firmware from here:

select patch tab and version D10.

Thanks, yup, did that two days back.

As well as BIOS 1.05 and 1.06. Wasn't sure it they were cumulative so did them in order.

Just about to post some interesting Performance scores between the Switch and Miix.

I doubt that it is a Bluetooth thing as the keyboard does not work when un-docked. Well, mine doesn't anyway.

If it was Bluetooth I would expect it to keep working when un-docked to the Tablet.

I wasn't saying it was a bluetooth keyboard, but that my bluetooth keyboard is treated as a USB keyboard. I believe the Switch 10 keyboard is also treated like USB and removing the power saving setting from the appropriate USB device could fix the 'first key press dropped' issue.

OK, tried that but still the same.

To get around the login screen pain, if instead of swiping the opening lock screen, I use the Enter key, that qualifies as the wake-up, so typing the password then works OK.

That doesn't help with normal delays when typing though. And, the dropped key doesn't happen with full size keyboard on the OTG-USB hub, so not a total loss.

Not perfect, but I am trying to love this thing. Smiley Happy

I try the fix suggested by billsey. It seems to work perfectly! Thanks!

    What exactly did you do?

Can you please give me steps to follow, I may not have done it right.

    Thanks.

Thanks Michael, that seems to have fixed it for me too. I had turned it off in the HID-Keyboard section and it made no difference.

Because of the 7-port USB hub that I have attached via the OTG, I had to first go through and list all the USB and Port numbers with the keyboard disconnected. Then, I connected the keyboard and looked for the new one and change that Power setting.

I only mention that in case someone else reads this and also has a hub attached as plugging in the keyboard did NOT just add it to the bottom of the USB-Device list. It was inserted as number 3 out of the 7. Also, my version of the Device Manager lists the section as "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and not as yours is shown under "Controllers...". Must be a win8.1 update thing I guess as this is only a week or so old.

Sounds like the switch 10 is similar to the W510, W3, and W4 in having limited USB power. I always use either a dock or a powered hub with mine.

Intersting that you can turn off power conserving, will need to test that and see what the effect is.

Yup, considering there is probably no battery in the keyboard on the Switch 10. Smiley Happy Can't get mine apart to see though, damned bent screw (by factory) is preventing opening the case.

Seems like that should have been turned off in the basic factory win8.1 setup.

Aarrrgggghhhh, spoke too soon. At start up this morning - it's baaaack! No first keypress after last night's full shut-down and a cold start this morning.

It is possible that this fix causes a battery drain?

Yes, if you use the keyboard rarely it will cause a greater battery drain since the keyboard isn't going to sleep anymore (or at least not as often). If you are fairly active on the keyboard the difference will be negligible.
