My v3-772g is performing much slower than expected in games with no obvious problem.

Problems started after I upgraded my bios from 1.13 to 1.15. I should say that before I did this I have been using windows 7 and with the bios upgrade I also installed windows 8.1 so both of these might have triggered the problem.

It was a hassle upgrading to windows 8.1. Some of the drivers on Acer's website do not work properly and I had to download from the vendor's web sites. Especially annoying was the problem with no sound over HDMI. I solved it by downloading the latest chipset drivers from Intel.

After I sorted out the drivers problems I soon noticed lots of other issues. First of all my fans seem to work all the time. My battery suddenly droped from 3+ hours of usage to less than and hour (not heavy load)! But the biggest problem was the significat drop in FPS in all games. I tested it with Futuremark 3d mark and got less than 500 points when the reference for this laptop is 3500+. I should probably mention that while my nvidia drivers seem to work, geforce experience crashes every time I try to open it.

I took it to the authorized dealer and they cleaned it and reported that they cannot find anything wrong with the laptop. The battery, they said, was expected to deteriorate! I thought that was absurd since the laptop is only 8 months old, but the battery had only 6 months warranty!

I really don't know that to do. I am thinking about reinstalling windows, but since no software problems are detected by the current installation I guess things will be the same and I have lots of stuff on this computer (programs) that will be a pain to install all over again.

My best guess is that the bios screwed things up (I really dont know how or if thats possible at all) and all my games run on the Intel integrated graphics instead of my dedicated 760m. However I cannot find anything related to such a problem or a fix.

Please if anyone has any ideas do share them Smiley Happy

Thanks

    nedjin,

I am sorry that you are experiencing some problems with the computer using the correct graphics card while playing games. Our systems that shipped with the onboard and discrete video card also use a technology called Optimus to switch between graphics cards for power savings.

You may need to go into your graphics card control panel and setup the 760m as your primary graphics card.

Maybe this link may help: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32163

NOTE: If you are not using your OEM load the above steps may or may not work. I would recommend reloading your computer to factory settings if that is the case.

    Thanks for the response Ryan.

Let me just share my recent findings for anyone else who might at some point experience similar problems.

I did all this that you suggested long before writing my previous thread. I also selected the discrete 760m for all games, tasks, and as a default from the nvidia control panel. This had no effect whatsoever.

After all my troubles I installed MSI afterburner which only confirmed that in some games Optimus seems not to switch to the discreet graphics card (despite being foreced to do this from the nvidia control panel, all power settings set to maximum performance), but rather uses the integrated Intel 4600. After installing the latest Intel drivers from their official site the problem was resolved, but only in some games, NOT all of them.

I guess that a clean windows re-install might solve the problem, but at this point I don't want to do that. However, this is an annoying problem which hopefully is only a software one.

HOWEVER, the problem with the battery life is a hardware problem and is really frustrating that a nearly new piece of equipment is failing so quickly and the warranty doesn't cover this! This I guess speaks of the quallity of the parts used. I really hope that Acer will improve on this in the future !
