Hi, I have and acer Aspire 5551 and i had bought it 4 years ago. and recently the battery does not charge when i plug in the the adapter, but it does sometimes when the laptop is turned off. I think theres a problem in the battery or adapter, but I'm not to sure.

I try to charge my laptop and it doesn't charge and the battery icon is not shown charging. Sometimes if a unplug the adapter and put it back it works for only a couple of minutes. I just wanted to know, would I need a new adapter? or a new battery?

First, I suggest that you remove the battery and power and take the back cover off. Then make sure all the accessible screws on the motherboard and other components are reasonably tight and secure, particularly around the charging jack. Re-assemble the cover, making sure the cover screws are also reassonably tight. Report back with results.

    Thanks

I did it, and no screws were loose, but it still is the same.

OK, good. You originally said that sometimes it charges for a few minutes if you unplug and then replug into the laptop's power jack or the laptop is off. While admittedly this could indicate either a battery or charger problem, I'd guess the battery has internal current leakage given it's age --- this would overload the charger and cause it to trip esp if the laptop was also on. I'd first try a new battery since they're fairly inexpensive as shown in this Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Laptop-Battery-Aspire-4400mAh/dp/B005TFONMC/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1397745209&sr=1-1&keywords=aspire+5551+battery

Chargers aren't that expensive either so you might want to order one at the same time to help qualify for Amazon free shipping. 8^) http://www.amazon.com/4730Z-4631-5732Z-4437-5810T-8233-7741Z-4633-AS5552-3691/dp/B00763W35Y/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397745530&sr=8-1&keywords=aspire+5551+charger

When searching the forum for battery charging issues I find hundreds of hits. My wifes 5332 had an issue and before coming here I assumed (due to age) it was the battery so I bought a new one. Then when that gives the icon to say its charging but never gets off 0% I purchased the "inexpensive" replacement charger. Still no joy. The laptop will run off the power supply but not from the battery for more than a few seconds.

I've flashed the bios (as this is often quoted on the internet searches) but still no joy. I guess it's time for a new laptop - needless to say it wont be another Acer - I've never had such a failure in all my years of purchasing laptops - I can only assume it is some kind of failure on the motherboard...

Have you tried popping off the bottom cover and poking around the battery connectors/cables/traces leading to the supply and MB? Might be something as simple as a board screw or other ground source that's come ajar over the years and touching a trace. Even if you don't find anything obvious, miracles sometimes do happen just by tinkering around like this. Good luck.
