apps do not work after microsoft update

I am only assuming my problem is a set of automatic Microsoft updates [downloaded 31 Aug 2014]. Nothing I can think of is different,  Of all the apps loaded in my win 8.0 system suddenly did not work the next morning after I rebooted the system

The only ones that DO work are:  Firefox

Turbotax 2013

Canon PIXMA MP 500 manual

Family Tree Maker 2014

Clicking on any of the others causes nothing--the app is completely unresponsive.  Included are Wild Tangent games [solitaire and Hearts] which I thought were resident on the hard drive and had no online interaction. Others not working [short list]:  weather, photos, stocks, camera, skype, music, acer crystal eye, etc.

Skype will activate from the task bar but not from the app page.

I uninstalled the 3 most recent files located in that update : KB2993651, KB2887537, KB2887536  one by one, rebooted and still nothing happened.

Tried to check the MS literature for info but have had no luck.  It must be an internet explorer problem?  [this is waaaaay above my paygrade]

I know I am using 8.0 instead of 8.1 but, for lots of reasons [none relevant to this discussion I think] I want to retain 8.0.

Hope this makes some sense.  As always, thanks for your help

There has been a lot of discussions regarding the problem caused by the update launched in August:

and discussions regarding the re-release of the update:

Thanks for your help!  I did find an access to microsoft and ran their "windows automated troubleshooter" .  It did whatever it does and generated a 2 pp report noting 3 errors found that it fixed:

Service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed

Windows Update error 0x80070057(2014-09-07-T-08_31_31A    - fixed

Resetting windows update data store - completed

DataStoreAndWULogfiles.zip  [preceded with some sort of icon a square with an "i" on a blue background]

                    31.66MB file name DataStoreAndWULogfiles.zip

same icon as above -  Error1

An error occurred while enumerating through a collection: Access is denied (Exception from HRESULT:

                    0x8007005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))

I am assuming this means the problem was fixed and they are just telling me what the problem was???

This morning I rebooted the computer and the re-release of the August update [which was originally  issued 12 August] completed installation.  The date on this update was 2 Sep and I had high hope...

Bottom line - nada, problem still there.  The same apps that did not work do not work.  I had to use IE to get to the Microsoft site of course and I would assume it would have been updated through their software when it checked for problems.  I do not use IE unless I have to but some services obviously do.

I hate to ask this question for fear I won't like the answer -- is there a problem that I do not have 8.1 installed?  I have seen the August Update [Update 2] listed for "Windows 8.1 and Windows RT".  Is there something in update that has screwed up my 8.0 setup?  I started out with 8.1 when I bought this computer new last winter and it was an absolute nightmare.  I finally figured out that the original 8.0 OS loaded on the computer was built June 2013] should have never been switched over to 8.1 as I was instructed to do with setup when I bought the computer mid-Dec 2013.  Ultimately I uninstalled 8.1, reinstalled 8.0 and added all the MS updates from the time of initial OS installation and it worked exactly as it should have. I also get the MS updates automatically.   I keep getting little nudges from MS [like once a week or so] to download 8.1 but I am reluctant to download any microsoft product that has not been vetted by lots of people like you who can fix their problems.

Sorry to have raved on so long but this is sooooooooooo frustrating.    Thanks

I appreciate the input but nothing has helped, even microsoft issuing a 2d set of updates.  My problem is probably out of scope for the forum.

go back and uninstall all of the Aug updates an reboot. then all you apps should work, or you can also RESTORE back to before you go the Aug UPDATES.... out of scope for this Forum? i honestly doubt that... the more honest you are the better assistance you will get. do you have any RESTORE Points made? if yes then simple RESTORE BACK to before the APPS stopped working... if you have NO RESTORE POINTS then you have 3 options. logo + C setting - change PC settings - update & recovery - recovery then chose your option. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16353842/recovery%20disk/recovery.png
