The USB keyboard is only working in windows 8-64bit mode using bluetooth.

How to get W701 to recognize the USB keyboard in Dos mode? (and in windows mode without bluetooth)?

P.S. USB 3.0 is enabled in BIOS

The USB keyboard works fine in a command prompt. By 'DOS mode' I'm guessing you are meaning recovery mode with command prompt only? A regular USB key board should work there, a Bluetooth keyboard will not because the drivers haven't been loaded.

    Thank you for your reply.

I do not mean recovery mode when I say DOS mode. I mean that you put a USB bootable flash drive so you can boot from the flash drive to get DOS prompt by changing the boot priority from Bios from HDD to USB. The USB Keyboard is not working even if you get the Dos prompt.

I understand that the Bluetooth will not work in DOS mode, but why is the USB keyboard is not working in Windows mode?

The USB keyboard is only working through bluetooth in windows. Let's say that I connected the USB cable to the keyboard and I want to use the USB keyboard and remove the bluetooth, the USB keyboard will not even work in windows mode regardless of having the USB driver in windows mode.

In other words, the USB keyoard is not working in windows mode or DOS mode, only when you use bluetooth it works.

Let me know what you think.

It could be a problem with the USB keyboard itself or a problem with the USB port. Does the keyboard work on other machines? Do other USB devices work on your tablet?

I'm still unsure what you mean by DOS mode. What operating system are you booting at that point? IIRC the last version of MS-DOS was 6.2 and it had no drivers for USB. There was a DOS mode in Windows 98, SE and ME and USB only worked in the latter two.

    Goog questions.

    (1) In answer to your first question, it appears that the USB keyboard itself is not working on other machines.

I tried it on 2 machines, it did not detect the USB keyboard. One of them is WIN XP, but I don't know why it didnot detect the USB keyb. Perhaps there are no drivers in WIN XP that detect USB keyboard since this one is USB 3.0 and perhaps the USB keyboard itself is not working. What do you think?

    (2) In answer to your second question, the USB port in Iconia tablet is working since I can put any USB flash drive and it can read it in windows and also I can boot from the USB port, so the USB port is working.

When it comes to booting, I tried Ms Dos 6.2, then I tried to boot from WIN 98 , then I tried to boot from WIN ME.

Let's forget about Ms Dos since it does not have drivers for USB, as you mentioned.

In the case of Win 98, you will get a the prompt, but the keyboard is not typing. In the case of WIN ME, it keeps loading commands to check the tablet before loading up the installation blue screen, but you still can not use F keys or type anything at all.

In all cases, what sort of driver files that need to be loaded in a bootable USB flash drive that can make the tablet detect USB keyboard? I made sure that USB 3.0 is enabled in BIOS. I do not even know why the USB keyboard is not working in WIN 8 in the first place, but it can only work as bluetooth only. If you remove the bluetooth Keyboard from devices and the USB keyboard is plugged in USB port of the tablet, it will not work either.

It sure sounds to me like the USB keyboard itself is bad. It shouldn't matter whether it's USB 3.0, 2.0 or 1.1, it'll downrev itself to match the port it's connecting to. Try a different USB keyboard and I'll bet it works fine, just not in MS-DOS or Win 98.

It's also worth noting that Win 98 and Win ME are both 16 bit OSes with some 32 bit extentions. There's a reasonably good chance that those older OSes will fail to work correctly on modern hardware. The W700 series also has motherboard fatures to handle cooling, and the drivers for that will also not be available with the older OSes. Do you have an application that requires not having Windows running or something?

Hello again. Thanks for your reply.

Apologies for the delay. There was further complications. The Admin password could not work and it was hacked. There is no way to recover the password. You could not update or install anything due to Admin password. I had to backup my information to a separate HDD. I had to buy a DVD external drive to use Acer recovery CDs. The USB keyboard is not working as USB, but the system detects it as BT and you can type with in WIN 8. You can not type with it if BT is removed from Devices. You will have to use Touch screen if BT Keyboard not detected and not installed in Devices.

In answer to your second question, I have Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon setup version on a USB and it can boot from the USB port is you set BIOS to boot from Legacy instead of UEFI. The USB port is working. Also, there may be something in the cable. I mean the Micro USB cable connected to the USB keyboard with a USB end connected to the the tablet USB port.

It looks like it has nothign to do whether it's USB 3.0 or 2.0 or 1.1 as you said.

In summary, either the USB keyboard is faulty or something is wrong with the USB cable.

It looks like the USB keyboard is defective but not yet confirmed. The cause is yet to be determined. It looks like Acer does not want to change it!!

I think I might understand what is happening. My W700 has the Acer keyboard/case with it. The keyboard has a USB port that is only used for charging. It is a bluetooth keyboard, not a USB keyboard. Does that sound like yours? If I leave the USB cable disconnected after a week or two the keyboard stops working until I plug it back in to allow it to charge.

This may be the case if you left it disconnected for 1 or 2 weeks.

About two weeks ago, I sent the tablet to Acer to determine the cause of this problem and it is still there.

I cannot unplug it now until it is out of charge as I don't have it here for the moment. If you believe this is the case, then you may be right if the BT will not work in windows when it is out of charge and it needs to be reconnected to recharge.

However, to my amazement and yours, a pc technician recognised by Acer told me that he received another tablet like mine with the same USB keyboard only different in color. The USB Keyboard and BT are not working at all in his tablet, but my BT is working in my tablet like I said earlier in the beginning.

I didnot discuss with him the charging issue, but will use it until it is discharged when I get my own tablet back with the report.
