Acer Aspire 4320 LCD display issue

Recently, my sister gave me her Acer Aspire 4320 (without camera). At that time, the LCD display would only work when it was open no more than 30 degrees. She would hook up an external monitor to use it. Since the display would go black when opened fully, we figured it was the cable, and I brought it back to China to try and fix it for use in classrooms.

I ordered both a new cable and a new inverter. I am no stranger to repairing either desktops or laptops, so I d/l'ed the service manual and opened 'er up. I removed the battery, and unplugged the machine. I then removed the keyboard, power panel cover, unscrewed the hinges, and removed the bezel. I have tried old cable/new inverter, new cable/old inverter, and new cable/new inverter. The display does not come on at all. Not even at a 30-degree or less angle.

I hooked the laptop up to my external monitor (VGA only. No HDMI port), and it wasn't even sending a signal to the display. I paressed function key+F4, and also tried function key+F5. No signal.

What should my next step be? Can the video card be replaced?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

    Hello cmknight,

1-Have you tried to connect the S-video output to a TV?

2-About the GPU, you have two options for your laptop:

       - Intel GMA X3100 (chipset on the MB)

       - Graphic card Nvidia GeForce 8400M SE (VG.8MS06.001)

    Thanks laurent_14.

If I can get my hands on a TV, I'll try hooking up via s-video to see if that works. Currently, I don't have one. I've tried inputting my SNID number ****** into Acer's website to try and nail down which video GPU I need, but so far, unsuccessful.

    Hello Chris,

    It exists 3 motherboards:

    MB.AKD06.001 - MAINBOARD 960GML UMA

    MB.AKD06.002 - MAINBOARD 965GM UMA

    MB.AKD06.003 - MAINBOARD 965PM DISCRETE

Could you give me the first 10 letter/number of the S/N (only)?

    Hello Chris,

    The motherboard is this one:

    MB.AKD06.001 - MAINBOARD 960GML UMA W/CARD READRE EXPRESS CARD W/O CPU MEMORY

I give you the correct part numbers of cable and inverter:

    19.AGW07.001 - INVERTER BOARD

    50.AJN07.001 - LCD CABLE W/O CCD

Check if you have the good parts.

On the MB, you have 3 video outputs after the chipset:

    TV-OUT--> ?

LVDS --> LCD panel - no signal

    VGA --> no signal

I think you have a chipset issue. The best solution is to change the motherboard by an one refurbished.

laurent_14, that is definitely NOT the result I was hoping to hear. However, I will see what I can find in the way of a refurbished mainboard, and let you know how I make out.

    Hello Chris,

As the motherboard may be defective, you can try to recover the bios.

The link of bios versions 3711 and 3810 (old site of Acer Europe).

You'll find inside the Dos files:

    - flash.bat

    - PHLASH16.EXE

    - Z013711.wph (bios)

You copy these files on an USB flash drive (formatted in FAT or FAT32 with Windows explorer).

You follow the instructions of this topic (Chigers - Message 2): black screen - flash bios V5-571

    Good luck,

    Laurent

    Nojoy, laurent_14.

D?L'ed the files. Unzipped to an 8Gb flash drive. Followed chigers' instructions to a T, and ... nuthin'. Access light on the flash drive didn't even flash. I plugged in an external USB mouse, and the wheel flashed its light, so I know it was getting power from the USB port. PLugged the flash drive back in, held down alt and esc, and pressed the power button. The only thing flashed was frustration. LOL

    Hello Chris,

The Aspire 4315 have the same bios setup utility. On the page 53 of manual, you'll find the procedure to recover the bios.

For this one, it's not [Alt]+[Esc] but [Fn]+[Esc].

    Fingers crossed!
