Aspire 5336- windows restore and erecovery both failing?

Hi all,

Last night, my system started hanging on the welcome screen (for over 30 minutes), so I attempted a windows system restore to a few days ago. That wouldn't work (I can re try it and advise of the specific error messages if that helps)- I then tried the Alt+F10 erecovery, but again receive an error message when it is almost complete- the message says "windows restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restart the computer, then restart the installation"

The complete factory reset is the only thing I haven't tried, as I'd rather not lose all the pictures and music I have stored on there- is there a way to resolve the issue at all, without completely wiping the hard drive? I have access to other pcs etc to download things and burn them to cd/DVD/memory sticks...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mark

You can run Check Disk through command prompt. But before that, we recommend you to try out the following steps to complete the installation of Windows in your system:
    1. On the screen that displays "Windows restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restart the computer, then restart the installation" error, press Shift+F10 keys. This will open up a black window which is actually a command prompt window.
    2. In the command prompt window, type "regedit" (without quotes). This will open your Registry Editor.
    3. In the Registry Editor, go to "HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion" and highlight ChildCompletion
    4. After highlighting, check for setup.exe on the right-hand side. If the value here is 1, you need to change it to 3. You can do this by double-clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box.
    5. Now close the registry editor and close the command prompt window.
    6. Click on "Ok" for the error and your computer will restart and complete the installation process.

To run Check Disk through command prompt, open command prompt window by following the instructions mentioned in the step 1 above and then type "chkdsk /f/r" (without quotes) in the window.

Note: As Acer offers Windows 7 with Aspire 5336, I presume that you are using Windows 7.

If you are able to access your system using "Safe Mode", we first recommend you to boot in Safe Mode and backup all your important data before proceeding with any other steps. To enter Safe Mode, you can follow the instructions mentioned in the Microsoft support pages below:
Important: Select Windows 7 from the drop-down menu mentioned on the top-left corner of the following webpage before proceeding with the instructions.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

Once you have backed up all your important data, I recommend you to run a Check Disk just to check if there are any errors in your hard drive. To run a Check Disk, you can refer to the following Microsoft link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2641432

If no errors are detected in your hard drive, you can proceed with "msconfig" option to diagnose the issue in your system. To know more about "msconfig", you can refer to the following Microsoft support page:
Important: Select Windows 7 from the drop-down menu mentioned on the top-left corner of the following webpage before proceeding.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/using-system-configuration#1TC=windows-7

To know how to use "msconfig", you can refer to the link below:
Important: Following link is of a third-party website. I recommend you to update your security software thoroughly before clicking on the link.
    http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_win7.html

If you are still facing the issue, you may need to go for a clean installation of Windows 7. To know more about this, you can refer to the following Microsoft support page:
Important: Select Windows 7 from the drop-down menu mentioned on the top-left corner of the following webpage before proceeding with the instructions.

Changing the setup value worked, I'm back in to windows, and after a moment of panic, I found all of my photos / music etc in the C drive.

Thank you very much for your help!
