A BIOS update would not allow the system to surpass the 4 GB limit.  That is a hardware design limitation.

Acer-Tommy as an Acer Technician, you should check the Acer website and see that the Acer website specifications for The Aspire M3100 say that the Aspire M3100 can handle 8GB of RAM memory.

There must be a  BIOS upgrade for the motherboard for M3100.  Where can I get this BIOS upgrade.  The M3100 BIOS cannot handle 4GB of ram.  When I try to use 4GB of memory, the onboard Ethernet and Video drivers fail.

There is no BIOS update available for this system.

Drivers should not fail because you have added RAM.  I would suspect a RAM issue or a mainboard RAM socket issue.

As stated in the previous thread where you've posted, you will need to contact service for additional assistance.

I have the same exact problem as the original poster. My Acer Aspire M3100 only supports 3 gb of memory. Once 4 or more is installed, three drivers fail (network, audio and graphics). I have tried numerous new and used sticks and even matched pairs with the same results. I found an updated BIOS on Acer's European website a couple months ago (R02-B1, 755A1P12.BIN) but it won't install and now the European website no longer offers it. From searching the web, there are others with this exact same issue. Since Acer offers XP & Vista 64 bit drivers for this model, it means there should be support for at least 4 gb of memory. I wish Acer would address this issue.

Edit: I found a new source for the updated BIOS for the M3100/5100 here:

    ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/desktop/aspire_m5100/bios/R02-B1.zip

I did some more digging and it seems there are different motherboard versions used in the M1100, M3100 and M5100 Aspire series. I think the latest BIOS for my M3100 is R01-A3. The original BIOS is R01-A1. Now, the problem is finding the A3 version so I can download and try it.

RS690-SB600-6A669FK8C-00 is the identifier for the motherboard I have. I'm guessing the R02-B1, R02-B3 BIOS updates are for a different identifier (motherboard version). This identifier is shown in the DOS version of AWDFLASH. I don't remember if WinFlash shows it or not.

Maybe Acer-Tommy can help. Also, it would be nice to know why so many people are having trouble running 4 gb of RAM.

I found the updated BIOS for my M3100-U3201A / RS690-SB600-6A669FK8C-00 here:

    R01-A3

I had to sign-up in order to download it. I unzipped the file and placed it on my DOS flash drive. I then booted to the drive and typed AWDFLASH. It asked for the new bios name and asked me to back up my old bios, which I did. The flash took about a minute and then I rebooted and reset the bios settings.

The good news is the flash worked - it now displays R01-A3 with a date of 10/10/2007

The bad news is the computer still does not handle 4gb of DDR2 RAM without driver issues

Next step is to contact the motherboard manufacturer since Acer is no help

    Hello everyone,

While our members are generally eager to provide useful information, be advised that Acer does not validate third party external links for downloads and is not responsible for them.

Acquiring files through such links is at the user’s own risk.

I found a work-around for this problem (not a solution):

    1. Update the BIOS to the latest version (if possible). I updated from R01-A1 to R01-A3.

    2. Click Start and enter "msconfig" in the search box

    3. Run msconfig

    4. Click "Boot" tab

    5. Click "Advanced" button

    6. Put a check mark in Maximum Memory and enter 4095

    7. Click OK twice

    8. Reboot

If you are running 4gb of memory, the computer should run normally with no driver issues. Windows sees 4gb and 3.25 is usable. This doesn't explain the problem but should solve the problem with running 4gb. I sold the computer so I didn't get a chance to try more than 4gb. Maybe someone here will give feedback on that.

    Good Luck

ps - these instructions are assuming you are running Windows 7 64-bit

    Hello Blueribb,

I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire M3100. I have tried to solved the problem but with no succes. Also contact Acer with no help. They just keep telling you that the hardware is damaged.

Thank you for the work-around, this works but I am limited to 3 gb. I have test this with 8 gb, it's the similar problem
    with 4 gb.

I hope Acer will provide updates in the future for older systems also, because you assume that this kind of upgrades are possible.

Ps, sorry for the bad English.

    Regards,

    René
