So I have this lovely Acer Aspire e1-570, which has a sticker on it saying it's 802.11n friendly.

Really?  I can't see my N network.

Running Windows 8.1.

Any ideas?

Do you know if your router was set to wirelessly-recognize only certain MAC addresses? If not, and you haven't aleady, go to Device Mgr and the wireless adapter properties. You should be able to fiddle with its properties --- try N only.

    Don't seem to have that.

We have 80211b preamble - set to "Long and Short"

AdHoc 11n - set to Enable

    Network Address

    Receive Buffers

    Scan Valid Interval

    Transmit Buffers

Driver for the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x is up to date at 10.0.251

What is your router brand & model?

Does Device Mgr detect any problems?

ASUS RT-N66U running Tomato 1.28 Shibby

The thing is that the Smartphones in the house can see the faster network, my old Acer TravelMate 3270 can see it (but can't make use of the faster speeds).

But the two newer Acer laptops can't even see it, they're stuck on the 2.4GHz / eth1 network.

So that I'm clear on this, the newer Acers can wirelessly connect but at the lower speeds. Correct?

Good. Prolly just a setting or three needs to be fiddled with in Device Mgr or your router software. Have you tried playing around with the Advanced settings in Device Mgr's wireless network? Like changing preamble to long only or whatever other options are offered? Can't hurt anything as these kinda options should be reversible within the confines of the Win or router graphical shells.
