Acer Aspire v5-552G-x414 freezing

I don't want this to be a hate post, but I'll try to be as cool as possible when writing this. I bought this at computer at Amazon.com at $629.99. It wasn't my first choice but Acer apparently didn't shipped my first order and then discontinued that (I actually waited like 1 month when it should've been shipped like in 2 days or 1 week, then Amazon told me Acer didn't supplied the laptop blah blah blah). Anyway moving on I got this one Acer v5-552G-x414 at the same price (lower specs...) but I didn't mind as long it worked.

So I got it after 5 weeks (Nice shipping time Acer...) and it worked flawlesly for like 1 day. After that it started to freeze and hang there for like 30 minutes then restart. I researched and found out that (that I wasn't the only one) and that Acer RAID drivers were not working properly so installing them directly from AMD woul'dve solved my problems but no, I didn't. I did a complete Windows 8 clean up and started from scratch. Again the problem persisted. Now I really don't know what to do. I do know is probably a driver problem (or maybe it's another problem beyond my knowledge) since I can use my laptop for hours in safe mode any problem. Can some please help me? Give me another alternative to this problem? I really don't want to return this laptop because I bought it in the U.S. but currently not in the U.S. and it's getting really frustrating that I get a freeze like in 10 minutes from a normal boot.

Thanks.

are there error messages at all or none
and where do you see error on RAID drivers, please?

I had the same problem on an Aspire V5-552P-8646.  Acer's TS suggestion was to refresh Windows 8.  This essentially wasted 3 days of work on application installs and file migration from another PC.  Most disappointing for a brand new PC, and obviously a wide spread problem on Aspire machines.  Sloppy QA on Acer's part.

Actually, Refreshing the system worked for 2 days and then the freezing returned.  I'm tempted to return this machine for a refund.

I have a workaround, disable your ethernet adapter... I haven't gotten it to freeze again.

Dear ACER, how can you sell me such a shoddy product? Do you not have proper Quality Control? How can a small glitch like this go un-noticed? PLEASE ELABORATE ON THIS ISSUE!

I've tried every ethernet driver out there, and even tried booting to linux, but as soon as you do something involving the internet it freezes the whole system.... Tried Bios updates, tried refreshing, tried everything!!!  Other than that... its a pretty nice laptop. But, I want my ethernet to work!

I ended up returning the machine for an exchange.  No problems with the replacement machine after a month's use.

I Returned mine and ordered another brand. My new laptop has more RAM, bigger screen, processor is way faster, optical drive, removable battery all at same price. Only bad thing about is HD Graphics 4000. But I have a desktop with dGPU so I don't care much about that.

Smiley Frustrated I'm working on a customer's laptop tonight with this same EXACT problem. Always freezes in about 10 minutes & reboots it's self in another 20 or so additional minutes. Trying the guys trick right now in the post below where he disabled the ethernet driver. I just started this test & will post the 1-Hour Test Results here shortly in the next sentence I write, lol. Result: 1:21AM-1:02PM the next day. Work up late...long night, lol. All seems ok now. Updating fine & the computer is no longer freezing up. Window 8.1 update will be the real test here in just a few, seeing that it's NEVER been able to. I'll post back the resuts of that shortly.

Smiley Very Happy Ok...8.1 update succeeded! I still have the ethernet driver disabled & the laptop has never froze up again after disabling it, so the guy in the other post was right about it causing this problem. He said he couldn't figure out how to make the ethernet driver work, but I'm not going to try by going to the Acer site & looking for a new update. Worst case senerio I'll just startup in safemode & disable it again, so no sweat off my back. I'm hoping Acer has fixed this issue since his last post. If that fails I'll try going directly to the manufacturer of the motherboard & see what they have to say about this issue...ie resolved or not. I'll post back here in just a few to tell you how the 1st step in this process went. Smiley Happy

Smiley Frustrated I spoke too sone! Later after a few hours it froze again even with the newer updated version of the driver that ended in the number 15. I asked it to update the newer driver & it actually updated it back to the older version which it's version number ended in 16. I thought that maybe since I had upgraded the machine to 8.1 that maybe the older driver would work now, but it didn't. I'm gonna visit our motherboard's manufacture's website in hopes that they've upgraded the ethernet driver. Maybe it's only available there, which I've seen be the case before in other laptop driver issues. **bleep** this really suck...just so you know Acer....grrr. You're REALLY making me work my little tech fanny off today & earn my keep around my little repair shop, lol! Sometimes laptops companies put the blame of problems like this one right back into the hands of it's maker & make it their problem to fix, and this may very well be the case in our perdiciment guys. I'll check & get back with you all, but 1st I'm gonna try the Acer site one more time to review ALL the available drivers & see if they don't have a Bio's update, or a newer version of mainboard Chipset...that may very well be the fix too.Smiley Happy

Smiley Happy Ok...I discovered a happy work-around this freezing problem until a more permanent solution can be found. It has passed a 12 hour stress test without freezing up even once using my new method. From what I can tell...the ethernet & wi-fi drivers are conflicting badly with each other. You CAN'T have both on at the same time, or your system will lockup the 1st time it needs to connect online for anything...ie browser, downloads, or updates. In order to get your system to stop locking up all you have to do is open up Device Manager & disable whatever Network Adapter that you're NOT using at the time & then you can get online, updates & downloads just fine. So if you want to use your ethernet port to get online...simply open up "Device Manager" & click onto "Network Adapters" & disable your Wi-Fi driver. When you're out & about town & you need to use your Wi-Fi to get online...say at Star Bucks, or McDonalds or something like that, just go back into Device Manager & disable your Ethernet driver & re-enable your Wi-Fi driver.
