I had to replace the disk drive in a TravelMate 5744; ordered recovery DVD's from Acer and have them; machine won't boot from the DVD drive.

Have tapped F12 during splash screen but no boot choice appears. Have tapped F2 during splash but won't enter BIOS utility. Tried booting from a USB flash drive but no luck.

Any suggestions how to save this machine?

If you haven't already, try quickly tapping F2 immediately after powering on before the splash screen. If that doesn't work, just press and hold the F2 while powering on and maybe the bios will respond to a KB error. If that doesn't work, you might try to disconnect the new HDD to see if you can force access into the bios menu to make changes. Then shut down, re-connect the HDD and go from there. If worse comes to worse, we can always try flashing the bios.

Thanks Jack. I've tried the various F2 deals and only get "No bootable device . ." each time. New drive in or out, holding F2 on startup, tapping F2, recovery disc in dvd drive, dos formatted usb stick, they all yield the same.

Without being able to boot from a flash drive how can I flash the bios?

OK. When you replaced the HDD or did any other work on the machine, do you think you could've disturbed the keyboard and its ribbon connection in any way? The ribbons can separate from the MB rather easily.

I don't think so . . . When you remove the cover on the base of the machine there's precious little exposed to "tinker" with. You can remove the HDD and memory, also the WiFi connection is exposed. I thought you'd have to remove the upper half of the case to expose the keyboard connector. I'll check to see if I'm missing something there.

This just occurred to me: when the machine boots the Acer splash screen displays but no prompt, lower left or right of display, to press F2 or anything else. Is that right or can the option to display that prompt be turned off in BIOS?

Another thought regarding the keyboard: When the machine hangs at "No bootable device . . . " I can do an Alt-Ctrl-Del to restart, which implies the keyboard is connected.

Yep, KB sounds OK. But missing splash screen F2 notation doesn't. I'm not sure if your MB has a pair of  bios-clear jumper pins. I believe they'd be located in the same compartment as the RAM modules and be labelled "clear" "clr" or something similar. If your machine is so equipped, I'm speculating the bios clear pins could've been inadvertantly bridged when working on the machine. You might want to check to see if your machine has these pins.

No joy Jack. There are no jumpers exposed with the bottom cover removed. I was kind of hoping I could pull the CMOS battery but that's not visible either.

Wonder what's involved in exposing more of the motherboard. I don't want to crack the case, and I don't mean that in the detective sense.

    Bill---

I googled travelmate, cmos, replacing and youtube. The button cell in some models seems to be quite nicely hidden and inconveniently-located behind the keyboard and a screwed-in daughter board. I also googled service manual travelmate 5744 but I doubt this manual's gonna help much without actually tearing into the thing. With all the screws and equally well-hidden plastic catches holding stuff together, some of the plastic parts are almost certain to crack or break apart. But I think that's part of the reason why designer-color duct tape was invented --- I doubt you could even tell how my busted-up keyboard is affixed to my netbook unless I pointed it out to you. 8^)

At the moment, I can't think of anything else to try assuming the KBs OK. I think an unresponsive bios is more likely due to an internally-shorted button cell or corroded contacts than a chip failure.

    Jack,

Quick update to report nothing significant. I've had to put the machine on the back burner for the short term, but I'm going to try a top-down approach - keyboard off to see what I can see and go from there. I'll drop a line after that happens

Thanks for your suggestions and encouragement.
