My reliable Acer just crapped out.  Troubleshooting says computer is connected to Internet, but no brouser can use the connection on either wi-fi or ethernet.  Eliminated  Win7 as problem by booting from dvd to ubuntu and using its browser.  There is nothing wrong with the network.  This began while computer was sitting idle, connected to Internet.  Could it be a bios problem?

    hi..

This could be an issue wih network settings, corrupted drivers and can be resolved by reinstalling the driver.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately, this connection problem persists for the on-board ethernet chip, for a usb wifi dongle, and a pci ethernet card.  It persists for every browser under Win7.  My son booted it to a ubuntu OS on disk, and the problem persists, so it has nothing to do with any operating system or any OS driver or anything on HDD.  All the devices check out on win7 device manager as running ok.  The problem is deeper and more fundamental - possibly the primitive bios drivers.  I would flash the bios if a replacement bios was available.  I've decided to replace the motherboard and cross my fingers.  If I solve the problem, I'll post the solution here.

    Hi,
Did you try to ping your system using Command Prompt?
Did you try to release and renew your IP address of yoyr system with Command Prompt?
Did you un-check (Automatically Detect Setting) in LAN settings?

1). To ping in Command prompt open command prompt from Start->All Programs-> Accessories-> Command Prompt
    Type ping your default gateway
    Type ping your DNS
    type ping google.com
check how many packets Reply do u get.

2). To renew / Release your IP address using command prompt
    Click on start->all programs->accessories->command prompt
type ipconfig /release *con* (This command will release your systems ip address)
type ipconfig /renew and wait till the ip is assigned.
Once the IP is assigned try to ping your system using Command Prompt

3). To un-check (Automatically Detect Setting) in LAN settings
Click on Start->control panel-> Change View by Setting as (Small Icon) and select Internet Options.
In internet Options go to the Connections Tab and in the bottom you find Local Area Network(LAN) Settings.
Click On Lan Settings And un-check Automatically Detect Settings.

Please try out these 3 basic steps and put on your result.

Thanks for the suggestions, ajay.  Just to make sure I was doing it right, I also tested a working computer.  Network and sharing center says sick computer is connected to the internet via my router.

    1.  Ping timed out for every ip address I tried.   2.  release and renew returns:  "media disconnected".  3. turned off "autoconnect" and suddenly 'ping' works for router and gateway, but doesn't ping google.com.  Still no connection to the internet

    Ok bro,
Did you try to put manual ip address and DNS to your system try

To put Manual ip and DNS
Click on starrt-> All programs -> Accessories -> Run
In Run Dialog box type NCPA.CPL and press enter

It takes you to network connections page. Right click on type of network you are using May be Local area connection Or Wireless area connection.
    Click on properties
In (this connection uses the following items) search for Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP 4)
Click om that and select Properties.
Now click on use the Following ip and Put
    IP address as 192.x.x.x
    Subnet Mask is taken automatically
    Default gateway 192.x.x.x

Then click on Use the following DNS server
Prefered DNS server : Network provider DNS server
Alternate DNS server : Network Provider DNS server.

And if its already in manual then try to change it to Automatically

I'm not sure I did what you suggested correctly, but what I did made no difference.  In the meantime, I replaced the mobo, and guess what?  It made no difference.  At least now I have a nice extra mobo to rebuild my son's aging computer.  I'm on a microwave link with Skybeam and my router serves 5 other computers, none of which has a problem.  Some of these computers are connected to the router via wireless, some by ethernet.  All use the same dns.

I made great progress over the weekend.  I did a filecheck and a signaturecheck on Windows system files, and several things improved.  My router is now seeing the computer, and the computer is seeing other users on my lan.  I can ping ip numbers on the lan and the Internet.  I still can't ping domain names.  Windows still says I'm connected to the internet.   My browsers won't respond to either domain names or ip addresses.  The computer has the correct name server ip and resetting it and clearing the ns cache doesn't help.  This problem may be caused by damage caused by a virus.  Windows Firewall is completely dead it doesn't respond to a click.  Very suspicious.  I have no way of restoring Windows,  I've already restored to the earliest date available.  I have no disk image -the repair disks I have use the restore files, not an image.  What can I do next?

Fixed!!  Thanks for the solution to TerryNet, moderator on Techguy.org!  From the command line,

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

    netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Thank you all for all your help!
