Acer 6920 Shuts down

Hi All,

My Acer 6920 keeps shutting down wether it's on battery or just mains power, sometimes straight away at other times after about 10 min. The battery doesn't seem to fully charge, getting approx an hour out of it IF the laptop stays on. I've checked the CPU temp and that seems ok, the battery seems to be at full charge and I've replaced the mains adaptor.

The only thing I can think of is the power board ??

Despite your temp check, still sounds like dust bunnies or a faulty fan are causing CPU overheating. I'd first try vacuuming the air intake with a shop vac. And blow into the exhaust port with the shop vac exhaust  Report back with results.

    Thanks

    Hi Jack,

Thanks for the reply. I've had the back off and used pressurised air to clean any dust from the boards/ CPU. From what I can tell the fan is running ok and any intakes/ vents are clear. The thing that makes me think that it's the power board or what ever regulates the supply is that if I charge the battery, it only runs max for an hour with only battery power. If I plug the mains lead in, with the battery in, the shutdown issue occurs anywhere from instantly to to an hour later. If I plug just the lead in, with the battery removed, it either shuts down within a couple of minutes or doesn't finish booting up.

OK. From that description, sounds like a big current leak --- nearly a short. Because of this, the battery probably isn't able to get a good charge. The charge indicators have lost their bearings. The power supply is also probably being overtaxed, not able to deliver enough current to the system esp when no battery is in there.

If it were mine, I'd remove the battery, power, all the screws and pop off the covers. Check around the charge socket for anything like a screw, cover screw or shielding that might be suspiciously close to grounding the middle pin when the covers are on. Check around other areas as well.

If nothing seems obviously suspicious, try this.  *Without* re-assembling the covers & screws, try to carefully re-insert the battery, charger and plug it in --- see if it charges up OK in a reasonable amount of time --- should do this on an insulated pad for obvious reasons. If it charges OK, disconnect the power supply and boot it up. Compare runtime laying there all apart in pieces with what you were seeing before. Also compare runtimes with the other ways you tested it before with the power supply.

If you don't see any differences, I think you oughta spring for a new battery and charger from Amazon. Unfortunately, looks like you'd also have to buy something else to meet the new $35 minimum to qualify for free super-saver shipping. 8^)
